Volunteers Prevented from Visiting Immigrant Detainees
When a group of volunteers went on one of its regular visits to an immigration detention center near Victorville a few weeks ago, they got turned away. The group says they were never told why. Visitations have since resumed, but activists took to the streets of Los Angeles yesterday to call for more changes.

Different Approaches, One Goal: Getting Kids to Read
Many 9-year-olds struggle to read a "Harry Potter" novel aimed at their age group. That's depressing enough on its own, but it's also a grim indicator of future graduation rates -- at Hogwarts as well as locally. Eighteen communities across California are taking part in a national campaign to enchant children with the magic of reading.
