A Tradition of Creating Friendships With the Elderly
On Thanksgiving, many hosts make a point of inviting strangers to the table. It's a lovely tradition. We expand our sense of family for one day. But for the other 364 lots of people languish alone, especially older people. Today we meet a sales executive from San Francisco who runs a program that sends friends to knock on some of those doors. It's part of our occasional series on people who volunteer in California, called "The Giving State."

Tensions Rise Over Solar Power in the Owens Valley
Anybody who's seen the movie "Chinatown" knows the story. Los Angeles took the water under the Owens Valley for its growing, thirsty population - some say by hook, some say by crook. But now, the old tensions are flaring up again. The flashpoint this time? Plans by the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power to cover a vast stretch of the Owens Valley with solar panels.
