Los Angeles mayor Eric Garcetti is calling for the city's most earthquake prone buildings to undergo major seismic retrofits. The Resilience by Design plan calls for seismic improvements to thousands of L.A. buildings within the next 5 to 25 years.
Lack of Standards Sometimes Leads to Big Paydays for State's Public Employees
When a 2010 expose revealed that city officials in the town of Bell were reportedly bringing home some of the highest public salaries in the nation, there was a clamor for more accountability in pay rates for state public officials. Public employee salaries account for a big chunk of California's tax dollars: some $40 billion a year. The Center for Investigative Reporting has released an analysis of four years worth of data on compensation for top public servants from around the state. Reporter Joanna Lin joins us to discuss some of the details.
