L.A. County Ends Controversial Immigration Enforcement Partnership
Los Angeles County is scrapping a decade-long partnership with federal immigration authorities that aimed to track down and deport undocumented immigrants who've committed serious crimes. The 287g program placed federal agents inside L.A. County's main jail in order to help identify and deport undocumented immigrants. It was meant to target only the most serious crimes, but critics complain the program unfairly ensnared people convicted of relatively minor offenses.

Dredging of Waterways Puts Dwindling Delta Smelt Population at Risk of Extinction
The Delta smelt has been on the endangered species list for decades, and it's long been at the center of California's water wars. It lives in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta, where the state gets most of its water. Now, the smelt is close to extinction. And that's bringing attention to anything that could it, including something rarely discussed: the dredging of Delta waterways for big cargo ships.
