Federal immigration officials have announced plans to improve conditions for families placed in detention, as the government awaits a judge's decision that could ban the practice altogether. Earlier this spring, we reported on a mother and son from El Salvador who were locked up while seeking asylum. They are among more than 4,000 parents and children detained since last summer.
