Supreme Court Lets Alameda's Drug Disposal Law Stand
In 2012, Alameda County became the first county in the nation to make pharmaceutical companies pay for safe disposal of prescription drugs. Drug companies fought the law in court. But it survived a crucial test Tuesday when the U.S. Supreme Court refused to hear arguments against it from major drug makers. That gives the green light to similar laws around the state.

Oakland Startup Tries to Change the Value of Water
Water is cheaper in California than you might think. Just as it is in most of the United States, it costs less than a penny a gallon. With prices so low, how can the state make residents value water more, and begin to conserve more of it? The governor and state regulators want to levy fines against water wasters. But a start-up in Oakland called MeterHero is taking a different tack: rewarding people who use less water.
