Last year the jazz world celebrated the 50th anniversary of John Coltrane's spiritually charged album "A Love Supreme," a work embraced then and now as a masterpiece. But the saxophonist's next release, "Ascension," with its genre-pushing free-jazz sounds, divided fans. Now, the Bay Area group ROVA reimagines this challenging work on its new record, "ROVA Channeling Coltrane." Jazz critic Andrew Gilbert has a review.
