More than 300 firefighters are still trying to knock down a pair of wildfires burning in the San Gabriel mountains east of Los Angeles. The twin fires broke out Monday in the middle of a scorching heatwave and consumed nearly 5,000 acres of bone-dry forestland. No houses have been lost. But residents of several hundred homes in foothill neighborhoods below the fires remain under evacuation orders.
