Fires Force Evacuations in San Gabriel Mountains
More than 300 firefighters are still trying to knock down a pair of wildfires burning in the San Gabriel mountains east of Los Angeles. The twin fires broke out Monday in the middle of a scorching heatwave and consumed nearly 5,000 acres of bone-dry forestland. No houses have been lost. But residents of several hundred homes in foothill neighborhoods below the fires remain under evacuation orders.

L.A. to Host New Smart Manufacturing Institute
President Obama said on Monday that Los Angeles will be the home of a new institute dedicated to developing sensors that make manufacturing more efficient. The institute will get $140 million in funding and is a public-private partnership with participation from companies like Google and General Mills. Manufacturers use about one-third of the energy in the U.S. -- and institute is tasked with making them less wasteful.
