The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors voted recently to effectively end the practice of placing incarcerated youth in solitary confinement, as part of a series of reforms. Now, probation officers in the nation's largest juvenile justice system are working to reimagine the security housing units, known as SHUs. At Camp Joseph Scott, a juvenile detention center in Santa Clarita, the once-foreboding cells are being transformed into spaces for therapy and creativity.
