Hundreds of miles of the Klamath would run free to the Pacific Ocean, opening up the largest river restoration in U.S. history. The plan took over a decade to negotiate, and it's now before federal regulators.

Tom Hayden came to prominence as a leader in the Students for a Democratic Society. Considered a radical at the time, Hayden would win a seat to the California Assembly and the Senate. He once said that "A silent majority and government by the people is incompatible." Tom Hayden died Sunday in Santa Monica. He was 76.
