Fatal Collision in Downtown San Francisco Closes Down Market Street Intersection

Police responded to a fatal crash on Friday morning at Powell and Market streets, one of downtown San Francisco’s busiest intersections.

Officers found a person in the street with life-threatening injuries at 8:18 a.m., according to the San Francisco Police Department. Despite life-saving efforts, they were declared dead at the scene.

Police located the vehicle and the driver, who is cooperating. Though the department’s Traffic Collision Investigation Unit has not yet released details on the driver or vehicle type, Reddit users claiming to be witnesses shared photos of a Surfside beverage delivery truck at the scene. There are reports as well of a scooter at the scene of the crash.

The San Francisco Medical Examiner’s Office will release the name of the deceased after notifying the family.

In a post on social media, the city’s office of emergency management asked residents to avoid the area of Powell and Market streets due to police activity. 

Traffic fatalities in San Francisco in 2026 continue to outpace last year’s numbers. Eleven people have been killed while walking in San Francisco as of June, part of 14 traffic deaths citywide, up from 13 at the same point in 2025, according to city data.

In December 2025, Mayor Daniel Lurie signed a new street-safety plan as part of a citywide overhaul of how it handles traffic safety after San Francisco’s Vision Zero policy expired last year.
