Richmond police officers shot and killed a man they said was armed with a knife on Monday evening.

Two officers fired their weapons after the man confronted them with at least one knife just outside a home in west Richmond, the department said in a press release.

The man, who has not been identified, died of his injuries at the scene.

According to Richmond Police Lt. Donald Patchin, the department received a call around 5 p.m. that a person with a knife was threatening to kill people on the 400 block of 1st Street.

The responding officers said they could hear a disturbance coming from inside a residence on the block, and as they approached the door, dispatchers told them that the suspect had obtained a second “edged weapon.”

The man confronted the officers after they announced their presence at the home, the department said. Shortly after, the officers fatally shot him.

It was the second police shooting in the city so far this year. In February, city police officers shot and killed a suspect they said was wanted for alleged domestic violence after a 30-minute standoff.

The department said it is starting its countywide protocol for when police kill someone, which includes independent investigations by both the involved agency and the Contra Costa County district attorney’s office.

Patchin said Monday night that the investigation was “in its early stages.”
