The Sunday Music Drop is a weekly radio series hosted by the KQED weekend news team. In each segment, we feature a song from a local musician or band with an upcoming show and hear about what inspires their music.

Singer, producer and songwriter Ryan Lopilato from the Oakland band Credit Electric says their song “House of Cancer” from the album Six is about longing for something that you know you shouldn’t have right now and dealing with the place that you’re in.

Lopilato has been making music since high school and looked up to other musicians as role models. He was born in New Jersey and moved to the Bay Area when he was 19.

He uses music as a tool of expression and a way to navigate his emotions. When it comes to working on a song, he arranges everything himself before bringing it to other people.

“[Other people] have their whole background of what tastes they have, and they just totally kind of like change and alter the track,” said Lopilato.

He identifies the band with the folk music genre.

“I think of folk, I guess, I’m thinking of the historical context of it,” he said. “I just think of somebody with a guitar and like nothing else to really support whatever they’re doing.”

The band’s members include Jeanne Oss, Evan Hiller, Cameron Iturri-Carpenter, Paul Montes, and Alex Miner. The song was mastered by David Glassebrook.  Credit Electric will be performing at a secret venue in Oakland on Nov. 18.
