He wants all state agencies that buy prescription drugs to come together in one huge bargaining unit to ultimately drive down drug costs.

Los Angeles Unified teachers, who want more pay and smaller class sizes, were preparing for a strike today. It would have affected 600,000 students.

Montecito Remembers Those Lost in Mudslides
A year ago this week, torrential rains pelted the community of Montecito. The area, near Santa Barbara, was scorched a month earlier by wildfire. The rain unleashed a flow of mud and boulders the size of cars. Almost two dozen people died in the mudslide, including a toddler and a teenager whose bodies were never found.
