We begin in Southern California. At least 15 people are confirmed dead and many others injured in mudslides and flash floods that struck the Santa Barbara town of Montecito early Tuesday morning. The tragedy happened after heavy rains fell on the hills and mountains stripped bare last month by the massive Thomas Fire.

A firefighter killed during the Thomas Fire in Ventura County last month died while trying to outrun flames that sprang up suddenly and blocked him from escaping. That's according to a preliminary Cal Fire investigation into the death of 32-year-old Cory Iverson.
