Stanford Drug Patent Case
In 1980, Congress granted universities the right to commercialize federally funded research by licensing the resultant patents to private industry. A number of California schools have done very well for themselves since then.

San Francisco BioTech Research Center Celebrates 10 Years
With 274,000 jobs in biotechnology and an unrivaled penchant for patent generation, California is a national leader in life sciences. The state is home to giants like Genentech and Amgen, as well as countless smaller companies -- all of which cluster around the research centers more commonly known as UC campuses. One particular research center in San Francisco, QB3, recently celebrated its 10th anniversary.
