Children's advocates in the state are hoping for a big Christmas present this year: $1 billion to remove toxic lead paint from homes. A Santa Clara Superior Court judge has until the end of the year to decide if paint companies should pay to get rid of lead paint still in thousands of older homes. Despite the decline in California's lead poisoning cases, without more money to remove the toxin, the most vulnerable children are still at risk.
