Bernadette Valadez wept Tuesday as she recalled her son's love of music. Emiliano "Emilio” Nevarez started playing instruments at age 5, an enthusiasm that grew right up to the moment he was shot in April in front of a downtown Oakland bar.
Nevarez, 26, was killed early Easter morning while packing up his band's gear outside the Golden Bull, a popular bar and music venue on 14th Street just off Broadway. He's one of 64 homicide victims this year in Oakland.
Valadez and officers from the Oakland Police Department held a press conference Tuesday to disclose new evidence in the case and "re-energize" the investigation into the killing.
“We’re asking for your help today for you to come forward if you know these people,” Valadez said.
“He was our brother,” said Tyler Salinas, who played with Nevarez in a punk band called The Lucky Eejits. “We were on the road together. We love Oakland. We love the Bay Area punk scene.”
