This Saturday marks the 20th anniversary of the Loma Prieta earthquake. It was centered in Santa Cruz County and killed 63 people during those few seconds of intense shaking. What if there had been a short heads-up before the quake struck, an alert like other countries have?

Classic images of the Loma Prieta earthquake are mostly associated with San Francisco and Oakland. But the quake caused $6 billion in damage throughout the region. Its epicenter was located 10 miles from Santa Cruz, where large sections of downtown were reduced to rubble.
