Muni-Map-2015

The map reflects increased service on certain lines, part of the Muni Forward program. Muni says the changes, which will go into effect April 25, will affect 165,000 riders.

A new "R" designation attached to certain lines stands for Rapid, part of the system's Rapid Network. (The "R" will replace the "L" suffix, which stands for limited-stop routes.)

"The Rapid Network will use transit priority lanes to move buses more efficiently and create better boarding zones to make boarding the bus safer and faster," Muni says. "On Rapid Network lines, we will also give buses and trains 'transit signal priority' in order to reduce delays."

What is transit signal priority? Says the San Francisco Chronicle:

"Buses on those lines will get devices that allow them to hold a green light so the vehicle can pass through the intersection, and will get some stretches of transit-only lanes and may see some buses added."

A second round of improvements is scheduled to be implemented in the fall, and a third early next year.
