"Sometimes in the Open" is the title of a new collection of poems from California's 65 poets laureate. While there's only one statewide poet laureate, California cities and counties ranging from Altadena to San Luis Obispo and Modesto have their own citizen poets, all bringing their written observations to wider audiences in their communities. We invited three poets to talk with us about their writing: California's Poet Laureate Carol Muske-Dukes, Sacramento's first Poet Laureate Viola Weinberg and Linda Noel, the former poet laureate of Ukiah.
