Update: The round-robin race is now over. Emirates Team New Zealand won -- it had no opponents (for the second race in a row), but there you have it.

Sweden's Artemis Racing was originally scheduled to sail against Team New Zealand, but Artemis is still readying its boat in the wake of a fatal capsizing in May. In Sunday's opener, Italy's Luna Rossa Challenge sat out its race against New Zealand in protest over safety rules.

Referring to the lack of an opponent on Sunday, the Chronicle called Emirates Team New Zealand's victory "hollow" and "a huge embarrassment for America's Cup officials."

Last week Mercury News columnist Mark Purdy wrote that the America's Cup 2013 proved that "gazillionaires are just as screwed up as the rest of us."

"Also, they can screw things up worse than the rest of us," he continued.

A terrible shadow has hung over the competition, of course, since Artemis crew member Andrew Simpson was killed on May 9 after its 72-foot catamaran capsized on San Francisco Bay. Also, fundraising to help pay for the event has lagged, and  the small number of challengers, three, has been disappointing.

Here is the full schedule of races.
