Conservatives Battle Liu Confirmation
Confirmation hearings for a UC Berkeley law professor got underway in the Senate Judiciary committee today. President Obama nominated Goodwin Liu to serve on the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco, and the choice is setting off a firestorm among conservatives. If he's confirmed, Liu will be the only Asian-American on the federal appeals bench.
Controversial Police Chief Dies
During his 14 years as chief of the Los Angeles Police Department, Daryl Gates was known as an effective innovator, but also as a racially insensitive cop who was unfit to lead the LAPD during a time of dramatic change. Gates' career came to end in the early 1990s, after riots following the acquittal of four LAPD cops involved in the beating of Rodney King left the city in flames and deeply divided along racial lines. Daryl Gates died of cancer Friday at 83. We discuss Gates' legacy with reporter Frank Stoltze, who follows the LAPD for KPCC in Los Angeles.
