The federal prison on Alcatraz Island had a reputation as a harsh, unforgiving place for the worst of the worst. But after talking to over 100 former prisoners and staff from Alcatraz, sociologist David Ward writes that many former Alcatraz prisoners managed to do very well on the outside after leaving the top security prison.
