British artist duo Gilbert and George began their career 40 years ago miming to a record atop a table and calling themselves “living sculptures.” Later they became best known for portraying themselves in their large scale photographs. “Gilbert and George” opens Saturday at the de Young Museum in San Francisco. We talk with the artists, whose work has been displayed in galleries and museums around the world — including a major retrospective at the Tate Gallery in London in 2007 and at the Venice Bianalle in 2005.
