He says throughout our country's history, Americans have successfully balanced an emphasis on individual liberties with the needs of community. But in his new book "Our Divided Political Heart," Dionne argues that the focus in politics on the radical individual and a limited role of government has poisoned the national discourse, and that it's time to emphasize the more communal-minded virtues that also define Americans.
