In Tayari Jones’ “An American Marriage,” newlyweds Celestial and Roy are forced to confront their commitment to one another after Roy is caught in a case of mistaken identity and sent to prison. While the book centers on mass incarceration and the American justice system, the novel is also an intimate look at one couple’s love story.
