Check, Please! Bay Area reviews: Afghan Awasana Kabob House, Hakashi Japanese Sushi Bar & Grill, Va de Vi

Check, Please! Bay Area, season 21, episode 7, airs Thursday, August 6, at 7:30 pm, on KQED 9. See other television airtimes.

In Fremont’s Little Kabul neighborhood, Afghan Awasana Kabob House dishes up huge portions of grilled meats and traditional Afghan plates. Guests devour a variety of bolani, tender kabobs and fragrant Qabuli palow. In San Francisco’s SoMa district, guests experience chef-guided omakase at Hakashi Japanese Sushi Bar & Grill. They savor creative sushi rolls and umami-rich oyster shooters, and complement their meal with sake. To wrap it up, guests dine at Va de Vi in Walnut Creek, an eclectic small-plates menu inspired by Spanish, Italian, French and Filipino flavors. The dish list includes silky-smooth burrata, paella with crispy saffron rice and quesabirria tacos paired with a rich consommé. And for “Cecilia Tries It,” Cecilia Phillips celebrates more than a century of cherry-loving traditions at the San Leandro Cherry Festival, complete with a pie eating contest.

Host Leslie Sbrocco joins guests Lily Sekera, Taran Khera and Yvonne Ng from KQED in San Francisco.
