"content": "\u003cp>\t\u003cspan style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 19.6px;\">For more than 50 years, someone has asked me, or rather sung to me, \"Should old acquaintance be forgot, and never brought to mind?\" and then, right after, \"What is your New Year's Resolution?\"\u003c/span>\u003cbr style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 19.6px;\">\t\u003cbr style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 19.6px;\">\t\u003cspan style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 19.6px;\">Now, the great thing about being raised Catholic was that I could treat the New Year's resolution as a test drive for Lent, so if I gave up cotton candy or sky-diving, I would just see how hard it is for the first three days of the year, just to see if I could spend six weeks without that particular vice.\u003c/span>\u003cbr style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 19.6px;\">\t\u003cbr style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 19.6px;\">\t\u003cspan style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 19.6px;\">And it's not just me. In law enforcement, we call it amateur night. "content": "\u003cp>\tOver the weekend, we watched Pitch Perfect 2. About halfway through, the character named Fat Amy announced that she knew three of the Wiggles. Intimately.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>My husband and I laughed, but my ten-year-old Aidan paused the movie and asked, \"Who are the Wiggles?\" His tone indicated that he believed that Wiggles were a secret gay term for some kind of deviance. Alas, 30 years into a relationship, I no longer know the secret language of gays, and I am much too tired for deviance. But I do know the Wiggles.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Stick with me here. You don't need to have watched Pitch Perfect 2 to get this. You don't even have to know who the Wiggles are.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Seven years ago, my boys graduated out of Barney, and the next program up was a group of Australian boys known as the Wiggles. They each wore a different colored mock turtleneck sweater and they sang songs like 'Hot Potato' and 'Fruit Salad'. Kind of like Teletubbies, without the antennae.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The Wiggles were a pre-manufactured group, like the Monkees or the Village People. With characters like Captain Feathersword and songs like 'Get Ready to Wiggle', it wasn't a hard market for gay men raising children to buy into. And when my sons were toddlers, they loved them. So much so that I drove down to San Jose to take them to their concert -- yes, four singing Aussies, 5,000 screaming children and me. I remember nothing other than my three-year-old son smiling blissfully and saying \"Wiggow.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>[ad fullwidth]\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>But now, Aidan doesn't remember Wiggles, and the part of me who spent a couple hundred dollars in San Jose resented this. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>This is what parenting means sometimes. You watch what your son watches. You hum along to the Wiggly Safari album. And then a little later, your little boy discovers little girls and forgets all about the Wiggles.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Sound hopeless? No. Sounds like life. Turn the DVD back on. Take your children to every Wiggles Concert you can. They won't remember it. With characters like Captain Feathersword and songs like 'Get Ready to Wiggle', it wasn't a hard market for gay men raising children to buy into. And when my sons were toddlers, they loved them. So much so that I drove down to San Jose to take them to their concert -- yes, four singing Aussies, 5,000 screaming children and me. Well, not for me but for my 11-year-old, Zane.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\tI got up early for church and after putting the cinnamon rolls in the oven, I woke up the boys.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\tZane said, \"Good morning.\" Overnight, his voice had dropped an octave. His nine-year old brother, Aidan, yelled, \"Look what Zane's got.\" Underneath Zane's bright blue, footed pajamas was one very upstanding sign that puberty had struck.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\tI'm the sentimental kind who cries at Hallmark commercials and here was my baby at the dawn of manhood. I teared up, but Aidan has always been the kind to ruin a Kodak moment and so he pointed to the pajamas and said, \"That's disgusting.\" Zane blushed.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\tSome days you just got to be late for church.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>[ad fullwidth]\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\tMy own mother had bungled the birds-and-the-bees speech. It was the late '60s, and the Sexual Revolution had not reached our Irish Catholic block in South Ozone Park. The dawn of my virility was marked by mom holding up an athletic supporter in a department store. She turned red and said, \"I think you're going to need this for gym class.\" That's it, an elastic band with a pocket. No explanation. I cannot quite blame my deviant lifestyle on lack of instruction, but I would have liked to know my options.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\tI was determined to get this one right so that Zane couldn't complain to his future wife or therapist that his gay dads had stinted on the details of heterosexual coupling. I poured a cup of coffee and began, \"Zane, this is the beginning of a great mystery.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\tZane rolled his eyes. \"Dad, you know we have been through this. I think I know enough about the mechanics. And, yes, I know -- respect for women.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\tI gave him a thumbs up and said, \"Well then don't let your brother tease you or in two years you'll tease him. Congratulations. "content": "\u003cp>\tFor more than 50 years, someone has asked me, or rather sung to me, \"Should old acquaintance be forgot, and never brought to mind?\" and then, right after, \"What is your New Year's Resolution?\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\tNow, the great thing about being raised Catholic was that I could treat the New Year's resolution as a test drive for Lent, so if I gave up cotton candy or sky-diving, I would just see how hard it is for the first three days of the year, just to see if I could spend six weeks without that particular vice.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\tAnd it's not just me. For 30 New Year's Eves my husband has given up smoking, and given it up again on Ash Wednesday, and some year it's going to stick.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\tI don't like New Year's Eve. In law enforcement, we call it amateur night. It's all those people drinking and smoking and eating like heck because they all face the prospect of waking up to their hangover the next day, knowing that they promised to face the next 365 days without bacon or vodka.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\tAnd there is something sad about daybreak on January 1st, seeing the neighbors in a rush to tear down their Christmas trees and Kwanzaa candles, rushing back to the gym and giving up.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>[ad fullwidth]\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\tThis year, I'm not giving up. I'm not giving in. "content": "\u003cp>\tThe firefighter said, \"You're remarkably calm for a man whose son just got his head stuck in a concrete staircase.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\tI sat there, my son Aidan on my lap -- well, at least the part that was not stuck in a concrete staircase -- and smiled. I wanted the firefighter to think I was one of those stoic dads who handles any pressure, but the truth was this just wasn't unusual. Maybe it was 11 years of parenting but by the third time I'd changed a colostomy bag, the world lost its horror.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\tMaybe it's the fact that all the children we have fostered were born drug-exposed. Maybe not. But sometime after Zane and Aidan threw all the pencils into the microwave, or set off the fire alarm in church, or told off the chief of police, or shut down the baseball stadium, I lost the ability to be shocked.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\tI have no idea how the parents of normal children spend their evenings. I only know that my nights are spent getting gum out of the dog's fur and chocolate syrup off of the sofa cushions.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\tTwo years ago, a woman offered me a free dog. The boys had seen him in the pet shop where we bought dog food. Turned out the dog was born with a bone defect. The woman said, \"If you and your husband can care for these two ADHD boys and those three dogs, then adding in a crippled puppy won't really make a difference.\" On the Island of Lost Boys, all are welcome.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>[ad fullwidth]\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\tAs Aidan and I sat in the cool evening air, waiting for the Jaws of Life, I said, \"Aidan, I'm gonna press your ears in, and with my arm I'm gonna push up on the rebar. Halfway through, the journalist asked a question that made the translator blush.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\tShe coughed and whispered, \"Which of you plays the housewife?\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\t\"Excuse me?\" I asked.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\t\"Who does the cooking and cleaning?\" she continued. Brian smiled and said, \"I want my children to live, so Kevin does all the cooking.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\tMy son Aidan added, \"Yeah, Papa can't even cook toast. Daddy cooks spaghetti so he's housewife.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>[ad fullwidth]\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\tMy turn to blush. I had just been busted out to 9 percent of Japan's viewing audience as the June Cleaver of the Island of Lost Boys. What would my fellow deputies think? What about the school? Would they fire me as assistant coach of the soccer team when they learned the secret of my lemon meringue pie? But it's not like I had ever been the butchest tool in the shed. Why was I so ashamed of wearing the apron in the family?\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\tMaybe as a gay man I felt pressure to be straighter than the straight dads. I had bought into that notion that machismo was the key to happiness. But what if this was wrong? Maybe toughness was the problem with those football players who thought that if they made big money knocking over their co-workers then it was all right to hit their wives. Maybe testosterone was the reason why so many cops need Humvees to feel safe driving around.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\tEmma Watson recently made a speech saying, \"If men don't have to be aggressive in order to be accepted, women won't feel compelled to be submissive.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\tLet me do my part. It's time to come out again: as the Daddy who is also the Mommy. I'm not yet ready to teach needlepoint, but if I'm strong enough to be gentle, to bake cookies from scratch maybe I can teach the boys to become better men. "content": "\u003cp>\tThe other night we watched a report about a black man named Michael Brown who had been killed by a police officer. At the protests, people shouted, “Hands up! Don’t shoot!\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\tMy son, Zane, asked me why. Zane is Black. I am a white man who works as a deputy. For years I have said that the color of our skin does not matter, but clearly it does. I could not say, \"Don’t worry. This happened back in Ferguson,” when the truth is that it could happen right here.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\tI don't know the circumstances of this death. I do know that a bunch of white guys in camouflage driving around in Hum Vees won't make it any better.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\tWe think that in California we’ve grown past the problem of white police officers profiling young black men, but we’re not much better. In San Francisco, where the black population hovers around 7 percent, more than 40 percent of those in jail are black.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\tZane is only seven years younger than Michael Brown. Statistically, my black son stands a 50 percent chance of being arrested before he turns 23. Having a white cop for a Dad might not save him.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>[ad fullwidth]\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\tI’m proud to work for the San Francisco Sheriff’s Department, one of the most diverse law enforcement agencies in the country. But I've been to enough statewide conferences to know that we are the exception, not the rule. At far too many trainings, I have been the only gay cop in the room talking to the only black cop.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\tWhat do I say to my son? I'm trying to change the culture of cops by being a cop myself. I'm trying to show my brothers in blue that the badge means more than carrying the biggest gun. I'm trying to put the peace back into peace officer.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\tAt the end, I could only tell Zane the truth: bad things happen and we need the courage to make change. "content": "\u003cp>\tWhen I put a “Go Irish!” frame on my Prius, I didn’t think about my son Zane's reaction to it.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\tTwo weeks ago, Aunt Lori took him to a basketball game. She later told me that Zane said, \"Thank God you don't have anything stupid on your license plate.\" When she asked what he meant, he replied, \"That Irish thing. Dad seems to forget two things:\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\t1. I’m adopted.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\t2. I'm Black.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\tAt almost 11, my little tween needs to be not like Daddy.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>[ad fullwidth]\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\tIn all fairness, growing up means learning you’re different from your parents. Back in 1969, when I turned 11, I told my Dad that no matter how much he loved Nixon I would grow up to be a Democrat. My Dad replied that he had said the exact opposite to Grandma Sadie about FDR.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\tForty years later, Zane has mastering the art of heavy sighs and rolling his eyes at my cooking, my TV programs and yes, my license plate cover.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\tThe psychologist says this is healthy but I miss that little boy who asked if I could beat God in an arm wrestle. I miss that he believed that I invented ice cream.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\tI miss being right. Zane went to a birthday party and I arrived to pick him up. He wasn't ready, so I joked around with his fellow tweens, and when he finally noticed me, he sighed and walked to the car. When he got in he said, \"Just remember that everyone makes fun of you as that old gay deputy.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\tAs I turned the Prius on, I asked, \"Notice the license plate? Go Irish?\" He nodded. \"Good,\" I said, \"'cause we're Irish. You. Me. We're Irish when we cook corned beef and when we root for Notre Dame and when we're so stubborn that we think we're smarter than our own Dad. And you know what? We Irish always turn back to family. Back in 1969, when I turned 11, I told my Dad that no matter how much he loved Nixon I would grow up to be a Democrat. My Dad replied that he had said the exact opposite to Grandma Sadie about FDR.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\tForty years later, Zane has mastering the art of heavy sighs and rolling his eyes at my cooking, my TV programs and yes, my license plate cover.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\tThe psychologist says this is healthy but I miss that little boy who asked if I could beat God in an arm wrestle. I miss that he believed that I invented ice cream.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\tI miss being right. Zane went to a birthday party and I arrived to pick him up. He wasn't ready, so I joked around with his fellow tweens, and when he finally noticed me, he sighed and walked to the car. When he got in he said, \"Just remember that everyone makes fun of you as that old gay deputy.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\tAs I turned the Prius on, I asked, \"Notice the license plate? Go Irish?\" He nodded. \"Good,\" I said, \"'cause we're Irish. You. Me. We're Irish when we cook corned beef and when we root for Notre Dame and when we're so stubborn that we think we're smarter than our own Dad. And you know what? We Irish always turn back to family.
