"bio": "Peter is a general assignment reporter covering Northern California news for KQED’s daily radio newscasts. He reports on a wide range of stories from current court cases to San Jose city hall.\r\n\r\nSince joining KQED in 1990, Peter has covered everything from the beginnings of the World Wide Web to the dot-com bust, from preserving Silicon Valley's open space to the preservation of historic Valley landmarks.\r\n\r\nPeter caught the radio bug at WAUS-FM while still a student at Andrews University in his home town of Berrien Springs, MI. He did local news and hosted a classical music program. Since then, he has pursued a variety of assignments, including production work at WBAI in New York and broadcasting to the English language community of Geneva, Switzerland via Radio 74. It’s the home of the Dolphin Club, San Francisco’s historic swimming and boating club, whose members have been rowing and swimming in the notoriously icy water of the bay for over a century.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Inside the clubhouse are magnificent antique boats and walls lined with black-and-white photographs of monumental races and portraits of lifetime members. The \u003ca href=\"http://www.dolphinclub.org\" target=\"_blank\">Dolphin Club \u003c/a>was founded in 1877, originally as an all-men’s club with a limit of 25 members. The temperature of the water in the bay generally averages 54 degrees Fahrenheit during the month of March, but this month it has been reaching 60 degrees. More than 50 performers — ranging in age from 6 to 18 — learn and memorize compilations of historical black poems and contemporary raps, which they perform around the Bay Area.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“We try to cover anywhere from 50 to 100 years of history in our presentation,” said Hodari Davis, director of YGB. Hodari’s mother, Laroilyn Davis, was the original founder of YGB in Ithaca, New York. She started YGB in 1981 when Hodari was in third grade, as she recognized the lack of black history in her son’s curriculum.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The Davis family decided to revitalize YGB in Oakland six years ago when Hodari’s daughter, Ikera Davis, was in middle school. Ikera now performs in the high school group and teaches the younger students.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>[ad fullwidth]\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Hodari writes original raps for the students to learn, combining them with historical songs and poems he grew up performing. The high school group incorporates more contemporary messages in their sets, with pieces about today’s police brutality and discrimination. The younger students learn and perform mantras from prominent black leaders such as Huey Newton and W.E.B. Du Bois.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“They don’t perform like cute little kids,” said Hodari’s wife, Candice Davis, who also teaches for YGB. “They perform like they mean it.”\u003c/p>\n\n",
