“Life is an adventure in forgiveness,” said journalist and peace activist Norman Cousins. Few if any plays exemplify this aphorism like British playwright Byron Lavery’s remarkable 2004 Tony nominee Frozen. And one can hardly imagine it handled more expertly than director Susan E. Evans and her Eastenders Repertory Company have done at the Eureka Theatre.

Lavery’s most well-known play is set in present-day England and features three main characters: Ralph, a serial killer who kidnaps and murders a young girl; Nancy, the girl’s mother; and Agnetha, a New York psychiatrist who travels to England to examine Ralph and present findings on the cranial physiology of serial killers at a conference. Through monologues — and eventually dialogues — the three lives slowly but steadily connect in such a compelling way that the two acts (which range between 60 and 90 minutes each) seem to whoosh by.

A key storyline involves Nancy’s 20-year path from anger to forgiveness, which stretches from her daughter’s disappearance through a five-year search and onto a long night of grief. Eastenders co-founder Suzan Kendal plays Nancy with sheer guts, tireless empathy and a keen ear for the unlikely sense of humor that Lavery has injected into the script.

Likewise, the critical relationship between Craig Dickerson’s damaged, convulsive Ralph and Sandra Weingart’s dispassionate and anxiety-ridden Agnetha highlights the problems of facing evil via the distance of professionalism. Dickerson and Weingart tackle the roles with a powerful sense of instinct that’s especially magnified when she needs to clear any touch between them — from a head examination to a hug — with a phantom prison guard. Weingart also portrays great discipline as her role switches modes between examiner at the prison and presenter at a conference.

Kim Tolman’s set design hits on various metaphorical strains with some wonderfully nuanced accents. She contains each character on his or her own blue mini-stage situated on the main stage, each of which vaguely resembles an ice floe. A diagonal line of blank book pages crossing the stage’s back wall signals time passing, while forgiveness seems to burst wildly but just out of reach as a cloud of oversized white flowers hanging high overhead.

[ad fullwidth]

As for Evans, she’s simply and skillfully done what a director should do: create an ideal physical and emotional environment that lets the main elements of the play — the actors — carry the narrative in its essential form. That’s extremely important with a play as sheer and elegant as Frozen, and Evans and Eastenders deserve the full support of San Francisco’s theatre audiences.

Frozen runs through Sunday, September 14, 2008 at the Eureka Theatre in San Francisco.

Trouble the Water sounds like the newest release from 20th Century Fox. The movie tells the story of two “born hustlers,” a small-time drug dealer and a struggling rapper whose lives are forever changed when their home in New Orleans’ Ninth Ward is destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. Trapped in their attic and abandoned by the rescue effort, the two have to get themselves and almost 30 of their friends and neighbors out of the floodwaters and into safety. Though they lose a tremendous amount in the storm, our heroes gain courage, strength, and a new perspective of the world in their quest for survival. Sounds like a hit, doesn’t it? Get some young actors or hip-hop stars looking to be taken seriously, teach them how to say “Y’heard me?” like a true N’awlins native, and wait for the Golden Globes to start rolling in. Hollywood would be all over this movie, if someone had bothered to write it.

But nobody wrote Trouble the Water, because it’s a true story, and nobody hired Mekhi Pfeiffer to play Scott Roberts because Mr. Roberts plays himself. Trouble the Water is a documentary about Scott Roberts and his wife Kim who really did find themselves leading almost 30 people out of the Ninth Ward. The film, directed and produced by Tia Lessin and Carl Deal, follows the young couple from a day before the hurricane to a year and a half later, chronicling their struggles first to survive, then to rebuild their lives.

Like all citizens of the Ninth Ward, Kim and Scott lose nearly everything in the hurricane and leave New Orleans with their lives barely intact. During their flight from the city, they encounter nearly every drama that has become inextricably linked to Katrina: frustration with a non-existent rescue effort, battles with FEMA over money that never came, nights in abandoned schools and convention centers packed to the gills with displaced residents. To finally reach safety, they must first steal a boat and paddle to dry land, then stuff a truck with women and children before driving away from the disaster zone they once called home. Their story is dramatic and difficult, but it is not one we haven’t heard before.

What makes Trouble the Water fresh is its perspective: much of the movie is seen directly through the eyes of Kim Roberts, who filmed Hurricane Katrina on a camcorder she bought for $20. This first-person perspective gives viewers a glimpse of the hurricane as it really happened. No one can forget the images of people waving for help on the rooftops of flooded homes, but it’s a completely different experience to see the view from the rooftops themselves. Though Mrs. Roberts cannot claim to be the world’s best camerawoman, her shots and running commentary provide some of the movie’s most stirring, remarkable moments. The documentarians splice Kim’s shots together with archival footage and footage they shots themselves, and ultimately craft a piece that touches on many of the issues of race, class, and bureaucratic bungling that have come to be synonymous with Katrina.

But at its core, Trouble the Water is a story of redemption fit for Hollywood. As I watched Kim and Scott’s lives unfold and change, I couldn’t help but think that, if this movie were a fictional film, I would probably consider it trite and strained. However, there’s nothing as true as reality; thus, when we see how Hurricane Katrina, for all its destructive power, might have created a new life for Kim and Scott Roberts, we can’t help but believe it. And in that belief lies a message not only about Katrina, but about storytelling and maybe even humanity: that redemption isn’t something that poets and filmmakers craft, that real people save each other and themselves every day.

[ad fullwidth]

Trouble the Water opens Friday, September 5, 2008 at Kabuki Theater, 1881 Post Street.
What We Do Is Secret | KQED

It started as a symbol, a bright blue circle on a black background, which showed up on stickers, buttons and on faded black t-shirts. That was how I became aware of The Germs. L.A.’s first punk band of note entered my teenage consciousness through the album cover design for G.I., the first punk record — the first record period — to be released by Slash Records, which would boom a short while later by signing X. The symbol looked vaguely medical, like something out of The Andromeda Strain, but was instantly iconic, like the cover of Joy Division’s Unknown Pleasures, another simple graphic on a black background. To Darby Crash, the band’s founder and leader, it symbolized a circle of influence encompassing those who knew The Germs, those who had become “infected” with punk rock.

Then, of course, there is the come on, “What We Do Is Secret,” a phrase that was always associated with the circle, so much so that I believed that it was the title of the album (instead of G.I.). What could be more seductive? A new movement from somewhere deep inside California’s southern wasteland, emanating from a nondescript garage in one of the miles and miles of tract homes that radiate out from Hollywood, a ground zero, an epicenter. Curiosity peaked. It became a mission to discover exactly what it is that they “do.”

Then there was the band’s appearance in The Decline of Western Civilization, a film whose influence was so great and was so often cited, my friends and I referred to it as just “Decline.” Penelope Spheeris’s documentary about the early L.A. punk scene features a hilarious interview with The Germs’ manager — “It’s more like being the mother of four three-year-olds who are always fighting with each other… Sometimes I get to the end of my rope and just wanna batter my children.” Darby Crash makes breakfast and plays with his pet tarantula. The Germs’ performance in the film is comical. The band is certainly tight, providing a slinky, sinister backdrop for Darby Crash, who opens his mouth and lets out one gutteral moan after another, which Spheeris subtitles with each song’s lyrics, an interesting comment on the band’s importance and the state in which she’s found them. The crowd throws things at the stage and taunts Crash, who is clearly strung out on drugs, falling down and hurting himself, just barely able to squawk out a phrase or two now and again. Someone draws all over Darby’s body with a sharpie, as he prowls the stage like a panther, clearly the ringleader of this chaotic catharsis. The performance ends with Crash falling off the P.A. system, microphone cord wrapped around his neck, a grimace on his face, and voilá — another icon. This image is used on the documentary’s poster and accompanying soundtrack album. My teenage friends and I will stare at it for hours.

The Germs broke up shortly after that performance, reforming to play one gig in December, 1980 to “show the new punks on the scene what it had all been like back at the beginning.” By the time the blue circles of influence had radiated to my home town in central CA, Darby Crash had already offed himself, sealing his own and the band’s legend.

No wonder this story would compel the production of the bio-pic, What We Do Is Secret. Its subject is a potent L.A. myth and the rebirth of Southern California’s music scene; a scene that, like all good subcultures, was destined to self-destruct. It is the tale of an energetic resistance movement, of punks creating anti-corporate anthems over music too chaotic for most ears in an era that witnessed the rise of Ronald Reagan. For young Hollywood filmmakers, who may not have even been born at the time, this period must be fascinating, not to mention ripe for mining: only a few good films (Repo Man and Spheeris’sThe Decline of Western Civilization and Suburbia) attempted to document it.

[ad fullwidth]

Given all the history involved, I was excited to see What We Do Is Secret, and I think that, all considered, the filmmakers did a really good job capturing some of the energy of the early punk scene. They paint a compelling portrait of Darby Crash who, according to this film, was queer in a (sometimes) brutally heterosexual scene. Who knew?

However, there is something basically unsatisfying in the conception of most musical bio-pics. Sure, the quickest way to win an Oscar is to simulate the ups and downs of a beloved music icon, with requisite temper tantrums, infidelity and the deal-clinching (for Oscar anyway) drug withdrawal scene. But I always walk out of those movies disgusted. Is this how we choose to explore the genius of Ray Charles? By watching a terrible actor (Jamie Foxx) behave badly in scene after scene, then finally kick drugs and “see” his momma for the first time? Is that all there is to Patsy Cline (Sweet Dreams, Jessica Lange) — bad luck with bad men? Was Edith Piaf (La Vie En Rose, Marion Cotillard) really just a collection of hyper-stylized nervous ticks, more bad luck with bad men, and a problem with booze and pills? Was the tragedy of Ian Curtis (Control, Sam Riley) just a bad marriage and an epileptic fit?

It’s difficult to capture creative genius on film. Even the best documentaries wrestle with this problem. Perhaps that’s what makes I’m Not There and The Rose so compelling. They try to get at the essence of their subjects (Dylan, Joplin) by discarding any connection with reality. One doesn’t reveal a beloved creative artist through the facts of his or her life, but through portraying the strategies he or she develops to deal with that life. It isn’t so much occurrences, which are easily filmed, that are at the root of a person’s creativity; it’s the internal processes that are essential to what builds these characters into people we are compelled to look at, compelled to love.

Similarly, there is something dispiriting to watching Shane West (nee Shane Wreck) simulate the life of Darby Crash, even if he’s had the practice of actually being in a reconstituted version of The Germs. West walks well enough down the path of Darby’s life (the conception of the band, Crash’s onstage mishaps, and his ultimate death wish), but he cannot encapsulate the things that made Darby Crash a legend.

",

Crash’s drive, his own unique character, his creative intelligence and charisma are the elements responsible. Watching an actor, no matter how good, try to simulate that is a somewhat empty experience. Likewise, watching the reenactment of The Germs’ gig, the same gig that appears in The Decline of Western Civilization, is like seeing an animal at the zoo in a simulation of his “natural habitat.” The animals look lackluster and bored. Combine this with director Jiri Menzel’s love of Charlie Chaplin, and in my mind it all added up to a light-hearted comedy about Nazi Germany, which is far from my favorite genre. A few spots of generically jazzy soundtrack music notwithstanding, Hats Off doesn’t patronize its subject or its audience.

Instead, it delights with judicious selections from the Mimi Weddell highlight reel: out for blood in Dracula’s Last Rites, dozing off at the Nicholson-Streep wedding in Heartburn; stealing brief scenes in Law & Order, just “doing it” at the gym in a Nike commercial, among many others. Works for her, most of the time.

“If you don’t dance, for heaven’s sake, you cannot aspire; you do not lift up from this earth,” she says. To which her daughter Sarah responds, “Baloney. Yeah, talk to me when you have to pay the phone bill and you can’t figure out how to do it. Talk to the earthbound girl.”

So there’s that, too. What really gets Hats Off past the potential for greeting card platitudes is its kind but clear-eyed appraisal of poignant family dynamics. Witness the telling detachment with which Sarah, who still lives with Mimi as an adult, calls her parents by their first names; or off-handedly tells her mother, “You probably wish you didn’t have children — they must have held you back,” one day while slicing Brussels sprouts; or chides herself with a mocking laugh for spoiling Mimi’s life by being a “complete schlump of a daughter.”

Mimi’s son Tom has a subtly wounded quality, too, and a bond with her that implies as much mutual admiration as mutual disappointment.

Why Weddell’s life warrants a documentary portrait at all, Johnstone sees, is that it’s ultimately a life much fuller and therefore more affecting than her self-cultivated image lets on.

“She’s a great success,” Sarah says. “She’s lived on her wits and her beauty.” It is and isn’t a compliment.

Hats Off runs August 22 through 28, 2008 at Kabuki Theater, 1881 Post Street. She is someone who knows how to give the camera what it wants and, in Hats Off, Bay Area filmmaker Jyll Johnstone gently wonders how she knows.

Weddell, whose headshot might be in the dictionary under “a class act,” didn’t really get started as a public persona until she was 65, but she’s anything but a dawdler. “Doesn’t time go really fast?” she says of her own drive. “It’s moment by moment by moment and you’ve got to grab it.”

She hustles, all right, sometimes enduring 14-hour days of cattle-call auditions, often all for naught. “I rarely get calls for little old ladies,” says one casting director who has worked with Weddell, “’cause that’s not what the world is about anymore.”

Which must be why it’s so satisfying to see that, in the tradition of local filmmakers Dan Geller and Dayna Goldfine’s Ballets Russes, Johnstone’s film has a wise, sly way of telling the commercially youth-obsessed entertainment industry to kiss off.

It must be said that Weddell’s gymnastic skills do impress — not because she’s old, but because she also seems to smoke like a madwoman.

",

Works for her, most of the time.

“If you don’t dance, for heaven’s sake, you cannot aspire; you do not lift up from this earth,” she says.

You might think of short films as, at best, mere trifles, or warm-ups to more sophisticated and complete-seeming films of feature length. You might think, movie-wise, that shorter means lamer.

Well, SF Shorts — whose longer, tellingly less concise name is the San Francisco International Festival of Short Films — should enlighten you. All it will require is eight batches of short films, loosely arranged by theme and played out over four days.

Many great short films are not at all commercially viable, which often correlates to their greatness. Except, of course, when the whole not-being-viable thing gives license to hacks and lousy storytellers. Many short films, actually, are horrible. It’s weird; those don’t feel short at all. They feel interminable.

But, the great ones are alive with narrative precision and formal inventiveness and with not caring much about lowering their denominator or otherwise pandering, usually because their makers long ago have been liberated by the idea that nobody’s going to see the thing anyway, so big whoop if they don’t “get it.”

Still, what’s not to get? Consider the perfect title of Frog Jesus; the wit and animated whimsy of Procrastination (“Procrastination is thesaurusizing words in your emails”); the great O. Among many other pleasures and surprises.

[ad fullwidth]

In fact, unfortunately, some of these films are so good that they’re going to make you realize how much of your life you’ve already squandered on crappy and forgettable movies of feature length.

Henry ending of My 13, in which a French guy narrates his remembrance of being 13, particularly the part about having a crush on his pal’s sister and stealing her diary; the astounding storytelling economy of Frankie, about a tough Irish teenager prepping for fatherhood; the disarmingly light touch with which Anti-narrative Number 4, described in the program as “a conceptual video in which a man’s life is examined,” self-consciously subverts any expectation that it might be pretentious. Among many other pleasures and surprises.

It’s hard, sometimes, to be a movie critic. A critic is supposed to be objective; discerning and shrewd, sure, but objective. He or she should know what a moviegoer will be expecting out of a movie when they buy a ticket, and he or she should judge the movie on how well it meets or exceeds those expectations. But when half the charm of a movie is in the story of the actors and filmmakers themselves, it can be hard for a critic to know what somebody with little prior knowledge of the film will think.

Such is the case with Baghead, the newest release from writers/directors/producers Mark and Jay Duplass. Baghead is the story of four struggling (read: failing) actors who go to the woods for a weekend to try and write a screenplay that will make them all famous. In the beginning, they drink and laugh and crush on each other, but when they start seeing a man with a bag over his head outside their windows, things take a turn for the creepy.

I can say with confidence that, even standing on its own, Baghead is a good movie. The storyline moves effortlessly from being a bumbling comedy about four nobodies in a clumsy, frantic love quadrangle to being legitimately scary. The camera work — the entire movie was filmed on a camcorder, and it shows — lends a compelling sense of realism to the film, and the performances are spot on and tremendously natural. But that’s where Baghead‘s backstory starts to become entangled with the film itself: the performances are natural because the actors are playing themselves. Because Baghead is not really a horror film about a guy with a bag on his head; it’s a meta-film, about the difficulties of making an independent film, and of being poor and ignored in a world of the rich and famous. Baghead is a movie made by guys nobody knows, starring actors nobody knows, about actors nobody knows making a movie nobody will see.

The film gets even more meta when you take into account the fact that the movie the characters are trying to write is a horror film about a guy with a bag on his head, and that the Baghead guy they thought they saw is actually a friend of theirs, who is working in tandem with one of the characters to make a movie about four people being stalked by a guy with a bag on his head. So, let’s reiterate: The Duplass brothers are indie filmmakers who made an indie film about actors trying to write an indie film, but who are actually the subject of another indie film without knowing it. Get it?

I did, but, then, I read the press release, so I knew who the filmmakers were and what the goal of their movie was. Though I enjoyed trying to pick my way through the self-referential mess that is Baghead, I found myself wondering if people who didn’t know that backstory would have any idea what was going on. My ultimate answer to myself was yes, the movie does a good enough job explaining itself that you don’t need to know all about it to enjoy it, or even to appreciate the levels of filmmaking commentary that exist within it.

[ad fullwidth]

Baghead is a movie that has a bit to say, about the benefits and downfalls of guerilla filmmaking, but it’s also an exaltation of the independent style, with a camera that never stays quite still and four terrific performances from four actors you may never see again. It’s fun, it’s funny, it’s just a little scary, and it ends exactly the way it should. Though hidden at first from the untrained eye, Baghead reveals itself to be a love letter to the indie film, and it?s a joyous thing to watch.

",
