The Alliance is the main social organizing group for the South Bay Native community. As the Treasurer Renita is involved in the planning of every community event that has been held which the Alliance has been involved with. Renita's steady presence, integrity, honesty and dependability have added tremendous support to our community.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Renita is an individual who we may rely on and is quiet and unassuming, but her strength and contributions are immeasurable. With over 34 years supporting science and technology in areas that include National Security, Fusion Energy, Environmental and High Energy physics, Randy works tirelessly to increase the pool of Native Americans participating in academic disciplines that include science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). He is a member of the American Indian Science and Engineering Society and recognized as a Sequoyah Fellows for his commitment to STEM and to the American Indian community. Organizations where he is active include the University of California American Indian Counselor Recruiters Association, MESA (Mathematics Engineering Science Achievement) and SACNAS (Society for Advancement of Hispanics/Chicanos and Native Americans in Science), ShadowBird Inc., and the D2K diversity think tank. He participates in science and cultural presentations as well as leadership, mentorship, and other acts of service that support students and professionals. In addition to taking part and sponsoring bay area powwows he often serves as master of ceremonies and arena director. Randy is passionate about outreach efforts that support and encourage a better understanding of Native American culture and society while promoting science and engineering technology studies. He participates in science and cultural presentations as well as leadership, mentorship, and other acts of service that support students and professionals. In addition to taking part and sponsoring bay area powwows he often serves as master of ceremonies and arena director. Randy is passionate about outreach efforts that support and encourage a better understanding of Native American culture and society while promoting science and engineering technology studies. "content": "\u003cp>After seven years as a host and reporter for the weekday morning broadcast of \u003cem>The California Report \u003c/em>on KQED Public Radio, Rachael Myrow is taking a new position in October 2014 as reporter for KQED's Silicon Valley News Desk in San Jose, covering a wide range of topics in the South Bay region, including government, the economy, diverse communities, technology and culture. Before Rachael left San Francisco, she answered a few questions about her time so far at KQED.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cstrong>How you would describe a typical workday?\u003c/strong>\u003cbr>\nIt starts with coffee. I make a three-cup thermos full of motor oil-strength coffee, with two sugar cubes and half and half. Then I take a hot shower. I wake up at 3:15am so I can be in the car at 4 o'clock to listen to NPR's newscast, which is 7am their time — prime time. I'm curious to see where California is popping up in the newscast. What's interesting to a national audience often leaves out a lot of what's interesting to a regional audience. By 4:15, I'm booting up the computer and scanning the newspapers, about 10 papers from around the state. I also subscribe to a lot of email news alerts.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>I tell people who ask how I get all this work done that I'm really just a hostess at a potluck. Most of the dishes are being prepared by other people. I'm putting them on the table and adding a few finishing flourishes, and sometimes preparing a dish myself, but it's a team effort. By the time I walk in the door, most of the newscast is already produced unless there's been some breaking news. To use another cooking analogy, there's some slow-cook stuff that takes weeks to prepare, and there are the news spots — a poll that just came out, for example. It's a mix on any given day.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cstrong>I assume the biggest challenge is getting up at 3:15am. What's something that you really enjoy about your job?\u003c/strong>\u003cbr>\nI love the audience. The reason I'm in public radio is the people I'm talking to. They are earnest and care about the direction of the state and their community, and they're intelligent enough to follow along. They don't need to be spoon-fed the basics. We don't have to play the Kabuki theater that you often see in Washington, DC. I think a lot of Californians are very honest and forthright about their political opinions. That's not to say we all agree with each other, but there's a sense that we're having a frank, honest conversation about it.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cstrong>Do you get a lot of feedback on your work?\u003c/strong>\u003cbr>\nNot too much. One of the nice things about social media is that we are trying to elicit more conversation. We had a story about water meters being installed very slowly in Sacramento, and I put a call out on Facebook asking, \"What are your local officials doing?\" There were some very colorful responses, which we put on the air the next day. The quality of the responses you get from people is impressive. It's a satisfying thing.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>[ad fullwidth]\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cstrong>Is there a recent story that was particularly memorable?\u003c/strong>\u003cbr>\nProbably some of the most satisfying reporting I've done has been \u003ca href=\"http://blogs.kqed.org/bayareabites/author/rachael-myrow/\">a series of reports about food\u003c/a>. The idea is not to just revel in our local foodie culture, which is fabulous, but to use food stories as a way to get to know different ethnic communities. We're surrounded by amazing diversity, which we tend to experience only through restaurants. But what if we had the opportunity to get a little closer and talk to people growing heirloom produce in their gardens, cooking feasts in their home kitchens or serving food in their churches and temples?\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cstrong>What's one of your guilty pleasures?\u003c/strong>\u003cbr>\nI binge-watch a lot of television. \u003cem>House of Cards\u003c/em> was fabulous. Also \u003cem>Orange Is the New Black.\u003c/em> I'm on to \u003cem>The Good Wife\u003c/em> now. I don't subscribe to cable TV, so I watch a lot of television 18 months behind everyone else.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cstrong>Binge-watching \u003cem>is\u003c/em> hard to resist.\u003c/strong>\u003cbr>\nSometimes I'll be at home watching on my laptop, and I'll look outside at the beautiful day and think, \"What am I doing?\" [laughs]\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cstrong>It can be a source of conversation though. \u003c/strong>\u003cbr>\nYes. "content": "\u003cp>When he was told that tickets for the three \u003cem>Wait Wait...Don't Tell Me\u003c/em> shows at San Francisco's Nourse Theater in July sold out in six hours, host Peter Sagal wasn't particularly surprised. \"As you can imagine, the Bay Area is a pretty good place for us. It's fertile ground for public radio listeners,\" he noted, adding, \"I love San Francisco. It's hard for me to think of a place I'd rather spend three weeks in the summer.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cstrong>What might surprise longtime listeners about coming to see a live show?\u003c/strong>\u003cbr>\nI'm even better looking in person. No, seriously, and I need to be upfront about this, we don't offer much in terms of visual appeal. It's a radio show. There are no dance numbers. No elaborate set changes — or sets, for that matter. We pretty much stand still because our sound quality demands that we mostly use wired equipment. Yet people really enjoy the show. In addition to the thrill of seeing us in person, I think the appeal is seeing that a lot of our best stuff happens in the moment. There's also a lot of awesome stuff that can't be broadcast, so there's always the \"come hear the dirty stuff\" appeal.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cstrong>Do you know yet who the \u003ca href=\"http://blogs.kqed.org/pop/2014/07/23/everything-you-missed-at-the-wait-wait-dont-tell-me-premiere-in-san-francisco/\">panelists for the San Francisco shows\u003c/a> will be? \u003c/strong>\u003cbr>\nWe haven't scheduled the panelists yet. We will certainly get some folks up from L.A. And Bill Kurtis will be there as scorekeeper.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cstrong>How involved are you with scriptwriting for the show?\u003c/strong>\u003cbr>\nI am very involved with the writing. Thankfully, I don't do it all, because I work with people who are much funnier than I am. By letting them contribute, I sound a lot funnier.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>One of the great glories and tragedies of my job is that we'll spend all week on a joke — writing and rewriting, arguing about which word is funnier. Then I'll try it in front of the audience, and it's immediately topped by something the panelists say off the top of their head. We can work on material all week, but if a panelist says something off the cuff that people go nuts over, our joke might not even air. But it's a small price to pay to broadcast a radio show that's actually funny.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>[ad fullwidth]\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cstrong>When do you start working on a show?\u003c/strong>\u003cbr>\nWith very rare exceptions we tape on Thursdays for air on Saturdays. Monday mornings we'll talk about the previous week's show: what we did right, what went wrong, lessons learned. As the week goes on and the week's news starts to take shape, everything sort of speeds up and gets more intense. We're often writing the script up to the very moment we walk onstage.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cstrong>Do you have a favorite segment on the show?\u003c/strong>\u003cbr>\nI love the \"Not My Job\" interview, partly because it's a chance for me to talk to someone I really admire or whose work I'm interested in, but also because, more often than not, the guests enjoy it too. They're often people who do a lot of interviews, but rarely interviews so goofy.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>I also love the top of the show, with \"Who's Bill This Time?\" which used to be \"Who's Carl This Time?\" It's where we get a chance to take a whack at the big story of the week.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cstrong>Do many people ask to be on the show?\u003c/strong>\u003cbr>\nA lot of times not only do we get people who want to be on the show, but we get people whose staff wants them to be on. \u003ca href=\"http://www.npr.org/2012/07/28/157487495/economist-paul-krugman-plays-not-my-job\">Paul Krugman, for example\u003c/a>.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cstrong>Is there anything else about the shows in San Francisco that you'd like people to know?\u003c/strong>\u003cbr>\nThis is the first time that we've done a residency in another city. It's fertile ground for public radio listeners,\" he noted, adding, \"I love San Francisco. It's hard for me to think of a place I'd rather spend three weeks in the summer.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cstrong>What might surprise longtime listeners about coming to see a live show?\u003c/strong>\u003cbr>\nI'm even better looking in person. No, seriously, and I need to be upfront about this, we don't offer much in terms of visual appeal. It's a radio show. There are no dance numbers. No elaborate set changes — or sets, for that matter. We pretty much stand still because our sound quality demands that we mostly use wired equipment. Yet people really enjoy the show. In addition to the thrill of seeing us in person, I think the appeal is seeing that a lot of our best stuff happens in the moment. There's also a lot of awesome stuff that can't be broadcast, so there's always the \"come hear the dirty stuff\" appeal.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cstrong>Do you know yet who the \u003ca href=\"http://blogs.kqed.org/pop/2014/07/23/everything-you-missed-at-the-wait-wait-dont-tell-me-premiere-in-san-francisco/\">panelists for the San Francisco shows\u003c/a> will be? \u003c/strong>\u003cbr>\nWe haven't scheduled the panelists yet. We will certainly get some folks up from L.A. And Bill Kurtis will be there as scorekeeper.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cstrong>How involved are you with scriptwriting for the show?\u003c/strong>\u003cbr>\nI am very involved with the writing. Thankfully, I don't do it all, because I work with people who are much funnier than I am. By letting them contribute, I sound a lot funnier.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>One of the great glories and tragedies of my job is that we'll spend all week on a joke — writing and rewriting, arguing about which word is funnier. Then I'll try it in front of the audience, and it's immediately topped by something the panelists say off the top of their head. We can work on material all week, but if a panelist says something off the cuff that people go nuts over, our joke might not even air. But it's a small price to pay to broadcast a radio show that's actually funny.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\u003c/div>",

Monday mornings we'll talk about the previous week's show: what we did right, what went wrong, lessons learned. As the week goes on and the week's news starts to take shape, everything sort of speeds up and gets more intense. We're often writing the script up to the very moment we walk onstage.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cstrong>Do you have a favorite segment on the show?\u003c/strong>\u003cbr>\nI love the \"Not My Job\" interview, partly because it's a chance for me to talk to someone I really admire or whose work I'm interested in, but also because, more often than not, the guests enjoy it too. They're often people who do a lot of interviews, but rarely interviews so goofy.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>I also love the top of the show, with \"Who's Bill This Time?\" which used to be \"Who's Carl This Time?\" It's where we get a chance to take a whack at the big story of the week.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cstrong>Do many people ask to be on the show?\u003c/strong>\u003cbr>\nA lot of times not only do we get people who want to be on the show, but we get people whose staff wants them to be on. \u003ca href=\"http://www.npr.org/2012/07/28/157487495/economist-paul-krugman-plays-not-my-job\">Paul Krugman, for example\u003c/a>.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cstrong>Is there anything else about the shows in San Francisco that you'd like people to know?\u003c/strong>\u003cbr>\nThis is the first time that we've done a residency in another city.
