For its inaugural Community Art rotation, KQED is displayed works from Creativity Explored (CE), a studio-based collective in San Francisco’s Mission District that partners with neurodiverse and developmentally disabled artists to celebrate and nurture the creative potential in all of us.

Founded in 1983 by Florence and Elias Katz, an artist and a psychologist, CE has facilitated the careers of hundreds of disabled artists and serves as a model in the field of art and disability worldwide. More than 130 talented disabled artists work in the CE studios. CE artists’ work is collected worldwide and exhibited in museums and galleries around the globe.

As part of its installation, KQED featured a selection of works by CE artists Peter Cordova and Pablo Calderon. Cordova’s works reference memories of his birthplace in the Philippines and his interest in Indigenous American cultures Calderon immigrated to the U.S. from El Salvador, and his subjects include the trucks and bicycles his family repaired in his home country.

The installation also featured self-portraits by CE artists, including Eric Boysaw, Christina Marie Fong, Joseph “JD” Green, Nita Hicks, Loren King, Thomas Pringle and Yang “Buurin” Yu Zhen.

The Creativity Explored installation was on view from January through October 2022.

Community Art Details

KQED Live and PRX Podcast Garage ticket holders can view art up when doors open and up to one hour prior to scheduled events.

Art is located in the lower lobby corridor leading from the garage into the lower lobby, and in the community meeting room in The Commons lobby.
