"content": "\u003cp>In California's drought, the struggling monarch butterfly may have found a sprinkling of hope.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Suburban homeowners ripping out thirsty lawns are dotting their new drought-tolerant landscapes with milkweed native to California's deserts and chaparral -- plants that have the potential to help save water and monarchs at the same time, because the female monarch will lay her eggs only on milkweed.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Overall numbers of the majestic black-and-orange butterflies have dropped from 1 billion to fewer than 60 million over the past two decades, as milkweed nationwide has fallen prey to development and pesticides.\u003c/p>\n\u003caside class=\"alignright\">\n\u003ch3>4 Ways to Help Monarchs:\u003c/h3>\n\u003cp>\u003cstrong>Plant native milkweed\u003c/strong> - Contact the \u003ca href=\"http://www.cnps.org/\" target=\"_blank\">California Native Plant Society\u003c/a> to find milkweeds native to your area\u003cbr>\n\u003cstrong>Provide nectar plants\u003c/strong> - The \u003ca href=\"http://www.pollinator.org/guides.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Pollinator Partnership\u003c/a> locates native plants by Zip code\u003cbr>\n\u003cstrong>Avoid pesticides\u003c/strong> – Pesticides kill monarchs throughout the life cycle\u003cbr>\n\u003cstrong>Become a citizen scientist\u003c/strong> – Scientists need data to understand all stages of the monarch’s annual cycle. Five years ago, Merriman didn't sell milkweed at all. They were up in the nursery on palm trees. They were everywhere, under tables. We were releasing 500 caterpillars a week on native milkweed.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Anya Shortridge bought a few milkweed plants last year for her drought garden.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Now she grows more than 100 milkweeds and carefully scans them for microscopic monarch eggs. But the tropical varieties bloom -- and provide a place to lay eggs -- all year, distracting the females and interrupting migration patterns.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Millions of North American monarchs travel from the eastern and central United States and Canada to Mexico each winter, while a smaller number travel through the western U.S. to winter along California's Central Coast. These Western monarchs co-evolved with native milkweeds, and eating plants from another region might make them more vulnerable, said Hei-ock Kim, of the California Native Plants Society.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"When you take plants and animals from where they originated, you're going to change chemistry, climate, biology,\" she said. \"You're changing all their habits, and so things work best when they are where they're supposed to be.\"\u003c/p>\n\n",

They were up in the nursery on palm trees. They were everywhere, under tables. We were releasing 500 caterpillars a week on native milkweed.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Anya Shortridge bought a few milkweed plants last year for her drought garden.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Now she grows more than 100 milkweeds and carefully scans them for microscopic monarch eggs. But the tropical varieties bloom -- and provide a place to lay eggs -- all year, distracting the females and interrupting migration patterns.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Millions of North American monarchs travel from the eastern and central United States and Canada to Mexico each winter, while a smaller number travel through the western U.S. to winter along California's Central Coast. These Western monarchs co-evolved with native milkweeds, and eating plants from another region might make them more vulnerable, said Hei-ock Kim, of the California Native Plants Society.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"When you take plants and animals from where they originated, you're going to change chemistry, climate, biology,\" she said. \"You're changing all their habits, and so things work best when they are where they're supposed to be.\"\u003c/p>\n\n\u003c/div>\u003c/p>",
