The study, from the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health, reviewed studies of transgender women (individuals who are born male but identify as female) in 15 countries, including the U.S.

Researchers say transgender women have been incorrectly added to other categories, such as gay men or men who have sex with men, and this misclassification results in their being overlooked in risk assessment and outreach.

Transgender women were 49 times more likely to have HIV compared to a reference population, according to a new study on transgender women and HIV.
