Established as a national wildlife refuge 100 years ago, the Farallon Islands are centered in one of the richest marine ecosystems in the world. While off limits to the public, a handful of scientists study this unique habitat, a breeding ground for marine mammals and hundreds of thousands of birds.

"bio": "Lindsay has been in media in California for more than a decade, dividing her time between San Francisco Bay and Monterey Bay. She has worked on documentary and factual programs for PBS (NOVA and NATURE), National Geographic, Discovery, and Animal Planet. She has also been involved with working and volunteering for local Animal Rescue organizations. She loves her new home with QUEST, letting her combine her love of animals and nature with her science-nerd tendencies. Lindsay graduated with honors from Northwestern’s Radio, TV, and Film department.",

"bio": "Dan Gillick is an intern for QUEST. Originally from Boston, he’s been seduced by the Bay Area, where he’s working on a PhD in computer science at Berkeley. He teaches artificial intelligence to undergrads, writes and edits for the \u003ca href=\"http://sciencereview.berkeley.edu/\">Berkeley Science Review\u003c/a>, and occasionally makes small advances in the field of \"automatic document summarization,\" which he hopes will be useful some day. When the weather is nice, he has trouble not thinking about playing volleyball on the beach.",

"content": "\u003cp>Every so often the fog retreats from my neighborhood in San Francisco, moves out to sea and we are blessed with a world-class sunset. Adding to the oranges and reds, yellows and spiraling indigos of the evening sky, it also gives us a special chance to see the silhouette of the strange jagged fist of rock breaking up the crisp line of the horizon. I have gazed out upon the Farallon Islands for years. The archipelago is clearly the wildest part of The City-seemingly always just out of reach. (Many people don’t realize that these little islands are actually part of the City of San Francisco.) Since they are a federally protected wildlife refuge, they’re completely closed to the public. So to get a chance to actually set foot on South Farallon Island was an absolute honor.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp> We’ve tried to share the experience in as many ways as we can. I encourage everyone to really explore the islands through Quest. "content": "\u003cp>\u003cspan class=\"left\">\u003cimg src=\"http://ww2.kqed.org/quest/wp-content/uploads/sites/39/2009/06/farallones.jpg\">\u003cem>The Farallones consist of a group of rocky islands that are 28 miles North of San Francisco Bay.\u003c/em>\u003c/span>A national wildlife refuge just outside the San Francisco Bay is now under surveillance! The California Academy of Sciences in partnership with \u003ca href=\"http://www.fws.gov/\">U.S. Fish and Wildlife\u003c/a> and \u003ca href=\"http://www.prbo.org/cms/index.php\">PRBO Conservation Science\u003c/a> has installed a web camera on the Farallon Islands. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The Northern Farallones were originally granted protection by President Teddy Roosevelt in 1909. However, these islands were not always protected. Human consumption decimated many populations, some never to return. The demand for fur, oil and meat devastated the elephant and fur seal population. By 1900, the robust Common Murre population dwindled down to a few thousand because of the demand for Murre eggs. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Today, the Islands are further protected under the Marine Life Protection Act and the Farallones are also deemed a state marine conservation area. The majority of visitors of the human persuasion are not allowed access to the islands as they would upset the balance of the largest seabird breeding colony in the United States. Those humans that do frequent the island include wildlife biologists and land managers who are conducting wildlife research. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>PRBO Conversation Science has been a local on the island day and night conducting research and monitoring the natives. The webcam helps their cause by collecting scientific data from a remote location. The camera enables biologists to observe without disturbing wildlife or incurring adverse environmental impact. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The water surrounding the islands makes this an ideal stomping ground for marine life and seabirds alike. Coastal upwelling takes place in the spring around the islands. The \u003ca href=\"http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coriolis_effect\">Coriolis Effect\u003c/a> along the coast drives surface waters away from the coast; this water is then replaced with the denser waters from below. Within the deeper waters is a wealth of nutrients that are photosynthesized into dense blooms of plant plankton when exposed to the sun. This energizes the marine food chain as the plant plankton is eaten by krill. Krill is then made available to eat for fish, birds, and marine mammals. It does not only feed surrounding wildlife but growing human populations as well. The most productive fisheries in the world are supported by coastal upwelling. Given the location and the diversity of wildlife, the Farallones is well worth protecting.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>[ad fullwidth]\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The webcam not only aids research; it assuages curiosity. \u003ca href=\"http://www.calacademy.org/webcams/farallones/\">Anyone can pilot the camera\u003c/a>. It is the only shark species in California that presents a significant danger to humans. White sharks live worldwide in cool, coastal waters. Interactions between humans and sharks happen each year and within the \"Red Triangle\" (a 100 mile stretch of coast running from Bodega Head to the Farallon Islands to the south end of Monterey Bay) there have been 48 white shark attacks since 1952. With increasing use of the coast by swimmers, surfers, abalone divers, kayakers, and windsurfers, the risk of attack will increase unless users become aware of the natural and unnatural history of the White shark.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Research accomplished by scientists at the \u003ca href=\"http://www.calacademy.org/\" target=\"_blank\">California Academy of Sciences\u003c/a>, as well as by researchers from the \u003ca href=\"http://www.prbo.org/cms/index.php\" target=\"_blank\">Point Reyes Bird Observatory\u003c/a>, the \u003ca href=\"http://www.mbayaq.org\" target=\"_blank\">Monterey Bay Aquarium\u003c/a>, and the \u003ca href=\"http://biotelemetry.ucdavis.edu/pages/whiteshark.htm\" target=\"_blank\">University of California at Davis\u003c/a>, has significantly increased our knowledge of white shark biology, allowing us to better predict their risk to human safety and to demonstrate the important ecological role that sharks play within our coastal waters.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Adult White sharks feed primarily on \u003cem>pinnipeds\u003c/em> (seals and sea lions) and typically stalk their prey from behind and beneath before attacking -- in most cases, neither pinniped nor people see the shark before it bites them. The initial bite is so rapid and so forceful (adult White sharks weigh as much as 1-3 tons) that the victim is often lifted from the water and then released, after which the shark typically waits for the victim to bleed to death before attempting to consume it.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>White shark attacks upon humans typically occur nearshore in water 10-30 feet deep, placing swimmers, snorklers, surfers, kayakers, and scuba divers (when at the surface) at greatest risk. The appearance of a surfer on a short board, for example, might easily be mistaken by a hungry shark for a basking sea lion. White sharks can see color, have quite good vision, and rely on that sense to spot their prey.
