California houses, especially the new ones, have a lot of recessed-can lights, also known as downlights. New California houses have an average of six downlights in their kitchens alone! My house was built without them in 1951, but the previous owners had seven of them installed.

Homeowners pay a heavy price for well-lit kitchens unless those downlights are air sealed and insulated. When Ori and his crew depressurized my house by 50 Pascals––equivalent to the pressure drop inside created by a strong wind outside––by closing all the windows, covering all the registers, and installing a "blower door" in the front door, we found that my house was leaky. Home performance professionals like Ori use "air changes per hour," or ACH, to gauge the leakiness of a house. Before taking care of my leaky can lights, my house measured .72 ACH. In other words, the entire air volume of my home was replaced by outside air--in this case, about half of it coming from my attic through the downlights--about every eight minutes. The American Society of Heating, Refrigeration, and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) recommends .3 ACH (at 50 Pascals) as a good measure for healthy indoor air. They also recommend that fresh air come from outside in a controlled fashion, not from attics or crawlspaces. This bushmeat is an important food and trade item for poor families in rural areas, while many residents of urban areas prize bushmeat as a delicacy. While not ideal, historically this practice has been fairly sustainable.

However, the bushmeat trade has now become a major commercial industry and a growing black market trade, as both demand and availability are ever increasing. A reported 1000 pounds of illegal meats enters the US per month, some of it found in airport customs with special agriculture-sniffing dogs, but much of it is sneaked in with tourists.

This increased unregulated hunting has wiped out large populations of animals, while uncontrolled logging and mining operations have provided access to the heart of the forest and its inhabitants. Not only does this unchecked consumption threaten animal populations, but it also poses a serious public health risk as many popular bushmeat species, especially primates, can harbor potentially lethal diseases that jump from animal to man, such as AIDS, monkey pox and the Ebola virus.

Bushmeat has even made its way to the Bay Area, including San Francisco and San Jose. Experts have found that African expatriates have had no trouble finding their desired delicacy if they know how to ask for it at certain markets and restaurants, apparently by code.

The Bushmeat Crisis Task Force (www.bushmeat.org) addresses these issues and is beginning to form focus groups to get to the bottom of the local desire for this meat in hopes of creating a successful education and outreach campaign to protect habitats and wildlife. There are many opinions on whether or not bushmeat imports should become regulated and for what reasons it should be allowed into the country or region, however few can argue with the fact that bushmeat imports are creating a major crisis and threat to wildlife.

[ad fullwidth]

Any opinions on the subject are greatly appreciated and will be forwarded to the BCTF.

The Oakland Zoo supports the mission of the BCTF and various projects in Africa that deal with bushmeat, like The Budongo Snare Removal Project in Uganda.

I used the example of a ginormous, 5,500 square foot home in Virginia that received certification from three well-known green building programs. I wondered whether the adjectives ginormous and green could be applied to the same home.

The Virginia home was done right. A rainwater catchment and filtration system meets 100% of the home’s potable water needs. The building envelope is made of insulated concrete forms and is super-tight (0.08 air changes per hour). The owner/builder, Doug Lowe, used reclaimed pine for flooring and recycled carpet materials, bio-based roof insulation, and the house includes dual-flush toilets and very efficient windows. The home uses 50%-70% less energy than homes of similar size--but aye, there's the rub. A big, efficient home generally still uses more energy than an average home, and the "embodied energy" in the home--the energy that goes into creating the materials, such as steel, and concrete–--can be ginormous in a large home.

So it's not so simple. Alan Meier, Home Energy's senior executive editor and a research scientist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, did a study years ago comparing various ways to measure the efficiency of 12 different buildings. Each scenario brought about different rankings among the twelve. But I have a proposal meant to bring some clarity to the concept of green home. Since a home exists to shelter people and keep them comfortable, why don't we rate a home according to how much energy it takes for this basic task? How many BTU per person per year does it take? (It would mean converting all the energy use, including kilowatt-hours, into BTU, or vice versa.) We could include embodied energy in the calculation. How much energy went into creating, transporting, and assembling the wood, steel, concrete, glass, fiberglass, and so on that went into making the home? If we include the expected lifetime of the home and the number of occupants (or bedrooms), we could come up with another number for BTU per person per year for embodied energy. Embodied energy plus operating energy would equal the total energy used to shelter one person for a period of time.

What do you all think? Go ahead and shoot some holes in my idea.
