SAN FRANCISCO, CA — KQED is proud to present an inspiring new two-episode series from Roadtrip Nation that celebrates the surprising, essential, and evolving role of public libraries through the eyes of three passionate young adults. Public libraries serve over 150 million registered users nationwide, offering critical access to digital technology, social services, and educational programs beyond traditional book lending according to the Institute of Museum and Library Services Public Libraries Survey (PLS).

“Beyond Books” premieres in September in honor of National Library Card Sign-up Month and National Literacy Month, with broadcasts and streaming on KQED and other public television stations across the country.

The three young adults featured on this roadtrip come from distinct backgrounds, but they share a deep love for public libraries and a passion for serving others. Together, they set out to explore how today’s libraries foster community, equity, and innovation—and to discover where their own future careers might lead.

The Roadtrippers

Isabelle is a roller-derby-loving bookworm from Seattle, Washington. After studying communications and seeing the expansive social role libraries play, she is entering the MLIS program at the University of Washington. With a passion for digital librarianship, pop culture, and queer history, Isabelle views libraries as essential democratic institutions and aims to make them more accessible and community-driven.

Jenny hails from the Los Angeles metro and San Jose/Bay Area regions. After exploring fields from fashion to philosophy, she kept finding her way back to libraries. Now a graduate student at San Jose State University, she is eager to dive into archival work and public libraries to explore how these spaces celebrate history while driving community innovation.

Maryan is a library and information science graduate student from Columbus, Ohio, and founder of Maryanslist, a platform highlighting inclusive children’s books. Starting as a library staff member, her work grew into a mission to foster representation and belonging in literature. As an aspiring children’s librarian, she collaborates with publishers, educators, and librarians to champion equity.

Behind the Stacks

Their roadtrip opens with an emotional interview in Costa Mesa, California with Mychal Threets—resident librarian for PBS & PBS Kids—who encourages them to discover their own “library joy”. From there, the big green RV travels across the country to Albuquerque, Kansas City and Chicago. Along the way, they sit down with leaders running innovative rural libraries, specialized archives and major urban systems.

By the end of the journey, the roadtrippers are resolved in the belief that the public library is an invaluable space for everyone—and a dynamic career field where each of them can carve out an impact of their own.
