"content": "\u003cp>It's fine.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003ca href=\"https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5095030/?ref_=nv_sr_1\">\u003cem>Ant-Man and the Wasp\u003c/em>,\u003c/a> the sequel to 2015's feather-light and perfectly forgettable \u003ca href=\"https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0478970/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1\">\u003cem>Ant-Man\u003c/em>,\u003c/a> is just fine.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FEWeV2_MAWg\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>It does what it sets out to do, which, by all readily legible indicators, is to be... fine. Agreeable. Inoffensive. A good way to pass a couple of hours in air-conditioned darkness. Jokes. Car chases. Fight scenes. Michelle Pfeiffer, briefly, in a hoodie and a chalk-white wig and, for some reason, fingerless gloves. A gruff Michael Douglas, less briefly, as the resident goateed genius of this particular corner of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (Tony Stark and Doctor Strange having their attentions turned elsewhere).\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Also: Evangeline Lilly as badass superhero The Wasp, kickin' thoraxes and takin' names and even crackin' the occasional joke, thank God. The always-winning Michael Peña as voluble sidekick Luis, whose presence in any given scene amps up its charm factor. Phrases like \"We have to adjust the refractors on the regulator!\" (LOTS of those.) And of course, Paul Rudd.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>[ad fullwidth]\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Paul Rudd! Ageless and affable! Looking just a bit jacked, lately. And bringing that affect of his, which is, as always, just a bit goofy, without going overboard — \u003cem>handsome \u003c/em>goofy. Hollywood goofy.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Ah, but:\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The first \u003cem>Ant-Man\u003c/em> film was light, of course, and that lightness felt like a small revelation: Cast a guy like Rudd in the hero role, then sit back and watch what it does to the tone of the film around him. Turns out he's a vector for breeziness, for a mood that's too sincere and good-natured to be glib, though it shares a lot of glib's DNA. As a result, there was something defiantly shaggy and low-stakes and loose about the whole thing. It wasn't lightning in a bottle, exactly — it wasn't nearly as dramatic as that. Static electricity in a bottle, maybe.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pWdKf3MneyI&t=9s\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cem>Ant-Man\u003c/em> director Peyton Reed (along with just about all of the cast) is back for the sequel, and he seems to have studied that film's accomplishments in order to replicate them here.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>And that's the thing. Because it \u003cem>feels \u003c/em>studied. And self-conscious. What came naturally, and perhaps accidentally, the first time out feels practiced and artificial here. And bringing that affect of his, which is, as always, just a bit goofy, without going overboard — \u003cem>handsome \u003c/em>goofy. Hollywood goofy.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Ah, but:\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The first \u003cem>Ant-Man\u003c/em> film was light, of course, and that lightness felt like a small revelation: Cast a guy like Rudd in the hero role, then sit back and watch what it does to the tone of the film around him. Turns out he's a vector for breeziness, for a mood that's too sincere and good-natured to be glib, though it shares a lot of glib's DNA. As a result, there was something defiantly shaggy and low-stakes and loose about the whole thing. It wasn't lightning in a bottle, exactly — it wasn't nearly as dramatic as that. So let me start by saying Donald Horton and R. Richard Wohl \u003ca href=\"http://www.aber.ac.uk/media/Documents/short/horton_and_wohl_1956.html\">already knew this would happen\u003c/a> back in 1956 when they coined the term \u003ca href=\"http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parasocial_interaction\">“parasocial interaction”\u003c/a> to describe non-reciprocal, make-believe intimacies, specifically the relationships we form with celebrities, television characters and even \u003ca href=\"http://www2.edutech.nodak.edu/ndsta/beto.htm\">the men in romance novels\u003c/a>. Let me also say I once waited on \u003ca href=\"http://beards.provocateuse.com/show/joseph_gordon_levitt/01\">Joseph Gordon-Levitt\u003c/a> in NYC, brought him wine, accepted his generous tip and didn’t so much as bat an eyelash. I’d never ask anyone to hug me or sign anything or even tell them I like their work--that’s just totally embarrassing and uncool. I certainly don’t confuse fantasy and reality, nor do I project longing, identification or wishful thinking onto strangers. I swear I don’t. If this sounds like I doth protest too much, it’s because I do.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Here’s the confession: when I see \u003ca href=\"http://tmagazine.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/11/27/leap-of-faith/\">Paul Rudd\u003c/a> some psychological flutter occurs. I recognize him like I would a friend. As in, I think I know him. Maybe he’s my old friend from college, someone I used to have a crush on. If we ran into each other he’d say, \u003cem>Laura, let's have a drink\u003c/em>. He’d appreciate how much I \u003cem>get \u003c/em>him and he’d get me too. Paul Rudd would think I’m funny. We’d ultimately be platonic, but with a perfect edge of flirtation. We’d laugh a lot. I can’t explain it and I can't help it, but some inarguable, reflexive part of me believes this all to be true. It's different from being a fan, from admiring or idolizing a hero, or even from simply being attracted to someone. The fact that I find certain other celebrities better looking, cooler, or more interesting is irrelevant. Paul and I were not a conscious choice, not even close.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>In my conscious brain I like my men smoldery and serious, or so I thought. My celebrity crushes lean toward the \u003ca href=\"https://s3.amazonaws.com/images.charitybuzz.com/images/65816/detail.jpg?1336054995\">Mark Ruffalo\u003c/a> and \u003ca href=\"http://filmsplusmovies.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/82865421.jpg\">Joaquin Phoenix\u003c/a> variety. But Paul Rudd isn't simply a crush. He's tapping into something else entirely. Our intimacy exists because he’s funny and familiar and because apparently deep down I like funny men more than I like smoldery ones. He's here to remind me of the value I place on humor, breaking down my artsy exterior to get at some truer ridiculousness within. After reviewing his IMDB, it turns out I’ve seen more of his movies than I would've thought (\u003cem>Role\u003c/em> Models!, \u003cem>I Love You, Man\u003c/em>!). I think the whole thing snuck up on me though. I’m as amused and charmed by him as I would be seeing a dear friend \u003ca href=\"http://www.funnyordie.com/videos/f82f71c80d/paul-rudd-talks-dirty\">join a hippie cult\u003c/a>, or explore the sadness and \u003ca href=\"http://www.funnyordie.com/videos/b16c5e76d4/this-is-40-bloopers\">hijinks of middle age\u003c/a>. I’m inordinately pleased by his \u003ca href=\"http://www.redbalcony.com/?vid=23764\">SNL\u003c/a>, Funny or Die and Tim & Eric skits, not to mention his turn as \u003ca href=\"https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=meXfh69ZLZg\">Mike Hannigan\u003c/a> on \u003cem>Friends\u003c/em> (the mere thought of which has me laughing out loud as I write this…seriously, what’s wrong with me?). I'm even drawn to him when he isn’t being totally hilarious, when \u003ca href=\"http://rookiemag.com/2012/01/ask-a-grown-man-2/\">he's giving advice to teenage girls\u003c/a> or \u003ca href=\"http://www.nbc.com/saturday-night-live/video/7-minutes-in-heaven-paul-rudd/n28643/\">hanging out in a closet with some guy\u003c/a>. I can only credit the strength of my mostly reasonable intellect with just barely overriding the warm feelings I experience when I see him acting like someone's idiot brother, or posing \u003ca href=\"http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa263/murderlegendre/New%20Album/paul_rudd.jpg\">in jokingly seductive photo shoots\u003c/a>. And if I’d known he was \u003ca href=\"http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/11/20/paul-rudd-grace_n_2164613.html\">in a Broadway play\u003c/a>, well, I might have tried to figure out a way to see that.\u003cbr>\nhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XWX4GUYGQXQ\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Countless PhD students have written \u003ca href=\"http://people.wcsu.edu/mccarneyh/acad/Camella.html\">their dissertations\u003c/a> on the phenomenon of parasocial relationships and I’m embarrassed to say apparently I’m a textbook case. The formation of these bonds has to do with factors too varied and complex to fully explore here. These include how many hours are spent viewing, the comfort of the celebrity’s persona and their assimilation into our lives through their work and general cultural presence. There are myriad film and television techniques that create bonds without us even noticing. How unusual and intimate to spend so many hours staring at someone's face, from this angle and that, without ever looking away as we would in real life. The constant casual discussion of celebrities is a shorthand that increases feelings of familiarity too. I've been talking to people about Paul Rudd for the last few days because of this article, and when he \u003ca href=\"http://www.justjared.com/tags/julie-yaeger/\">appeared on the Oscar's\u003c/a> Sunday night, I nearly lost it. The beard! The rumpled tuxedo! What's my friend doing at the Oscar's?\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>This isn’t my dissertation, but it’s safe to say things are getting a bit pathological if you think the soap star playing the doctor can give you medical advice or that \u003ca href=\"http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w6XGUhzfutc\">no real man will ever live up to the one in the romantic comedy\u003c/a> (and people do take it that far). But it’s also safe to say that most of us operate somewhere more reasonable, but definitely \u003cem>somewhere\u003c/em>, within this spectrum of one-sided familiarity. These confusions are perhaps unavoidable, not so much a sign of one person’s fragile, overactive psyche as they are a by-product of being inundated and compelled by stories that are so often creating idealized, relatable, or serialized worlds.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>In an informal and unscientifically conducted poll I’ve encountered the following data:\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>-Someone who is mad at Justin Bieber for \u003ca href=\"http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-2270735/Selena-Gomez-hints-possible-Justin-Bieber-break-song-takes-studio.html\">how it all went down with Selena Gomez\u003c/a>.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>-Someone who thinks she might have been the one who could’ve given the right sort of tough love to \u003ca href=\"http://www.writing.upenn.edu/~afilreis/88v/kerouac-technique.html\">Jack Kerouac\u003c/a>.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>-Someone drawn to \u003ca href=\"http://hollywoodeastconnection.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/burnnotice-thumb-570x390-2590.jpg\">spies\u003c/a> who know how to feign weakness but ultimately triumph.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>-Someone who became an extra in a \u003ca href=\"https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YkjtGovd-nw\">James Franco film\u003c/a> because she felt sure they’d have a connection.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>-Someone sure that she and \u003ca href=\"http://shechive.files.wordpress.com/2012/07/celeb-rundown-36.jpg\">Mindy Kaling\u003c/a> would have an amazing time hanging out.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cimg class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-110098\" src=\"https://ww2.kqed.org/pop/wp-content/uploads/sites/12/2013/02/Paul-Rudd-Oh-OK.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\">\u003c/p>\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: center\">\n\u003c/p>\u003cp>So Paul and I are not the only ones who have this intimacy at a distance, which makes me feel better. Our parasocial relationships speak to the qualities in others that appeal and resonate in revealing ways. We form impressions of celebrities like we do with anyone else. \u003ca href=\"http://encyclopedia.jrank.org/articles/pages/6428/Attachment-to-Media-Characters.html\">Empathy plays an interesting role\u003c/a> in these relationships too, with those of us who display stronger feelings of empathy often creating stronger parasocial bonds as well. Empathy is what truly involves us in stories, and in the lives of other people, fictional and not. So it makes sense that the inclination toward parasocial connection actually makes stories better, more urgent and more engaging. On a fundamental level we care more when we're connected more and vice versa. It’s an intriguing and particular human tendency to identify so strongly with what we see in these total strangers and the stories around them. We entangle ourselves, emotionally and psychologically, in our attraction and identification, in our desire to relate and empathize.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>http://www.funnyordie.com/videos/626177adb2/paul-rudd-pitches-harvey-weinstein\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The notion of the parasocial suggests that people are not just passive viewers. We really do seek out what speaks to us, yet we also have a profound inability and unwillingness to acknowledge the media's influence on us at the same time. I definitely feel that duality. I tell people about my BFF Paul Rudd with high levels of self-deprecation, irony and disclaimers. Because it doesn’t count if I’m aware of it, right? But it also happened without me being aware of it. And at the end of the day, I really do feel it. So let me start by saying Donald Horton and R. Richard Wohl \u003ca href=\"http://www.aber.ac.uk/media/Documents/short/horton_and_wohl_1956.html\">already knew this would happen\u003c/a> back in 1956 when they coined the term \u003ca href=\"http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parasocial_interaction\">“parasocial interaction”\u003c/a> to describe non-reciprocal, make-believe intimacies, specifically the relationships we form with celebrities, television characters and even \u003ca href=\"http://www2.edutech.nodak.edu/ndsta/beto.htm\">the men in romance novels\u003c/a>. Let me also say I once waited on \u003ca href=\"http://beards.provocateuse.com/show/joseph_gordon_levitt/01\">Joseph Gordon-Levitt\u003c/a> in NYC, brought him wine, accepted his generous tip and didn’t so much as bat an eyelash. I’d never ask anyone to hug me or sign anything or even tell them I like their work--that’s just totally embarrassing and uncool. I certainly don’t confuse fantasy and reality, nor do I project longing, identification or wishful thinking onto strangers. I swear I don’t. If this sounds like I doth protest too much, it’s because I do.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Here’s the confession: when I see \u003ca href=\"http://tmagazine.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/11/27/leap-of-faith/\">Paul Rudd\u003c/a> some psychological flutter occurs. I recognize him like I would a friend. As in, I think I know him. Maybe he’s my old friend from college, someone I used to have a crush on. If we ran into each other he’d say, \u003cem>Laura, let's have a drink\u003c/em>. He’d appreciate how much I \u003cem>get \u003c/em>him and he’d get me too. Paul Rudd would think I’m funny. We’d ultimately be platonic, but with a perfect edge of flirtation. We’d laugh a lot. I can’t explain it and I can't help it, but some inarguable, reflexive part of me believes this all to be true. It's different from being a fan, from admiring or idolizing a hero, or even from simply being attracted to someone. The fact that I find certain other celebrities better looking, cooler, or more interesting is irrelevant. Paul and I were not a conscious choice, not even close.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>In my conscious brain I like my men smoldery and serious, or so I thought. My celebrity crushes lean toward the \u003ca href=\"https://s3.amazonaws.com/images.charitybuzz.com/images/65816/detail.jpg?1336054995\">Mark Ruffalo\u003c/a> and \u003ca href=\"http://filmsplusmovies.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/82865421.jpg\">Joaquin Phoenix\u003c/a> variety. But Paul Rudd isn't simply a crush. He's tapping into something else entirely. Our intimacy exists because he’s funny and familiar and because apparently deep down I like funny men more than I like smoldery ones. He's here to remind me of the value I place on humor, breaking down my artsy exterior to get at some truer ridiculousness within. After reviewing his IMDB, it turns out I’ve seen more of his movies than I would've thought (\u003cem>Role\u003c/em> Models!, \u003cem>I Love You, Man\u003c/em>!). I think the whole thing snuck up on me though. I’m as amused and charmed by him as I would be seeing a dear friend \u003ca href=\"http://www.funnyordie.com/videos/f82f71c80d/paul-rudd-talks-dirty\">join a hippie cult\u003c/a>, or explore the sadness and \u003ca href=\"http://www.funnyordie.com/videos/b16c5e76d4/this-is-40-bloopers\">hijinks of middle age\u003c/a>. I’m inordinately pleased by his \u003ca href=\"http://www.redbalcony.com/?vid=23764\">SNL\u003c/a>, Funny or Die and Tim & Eric skits, not to mention his turn as \u003ca href=\"https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=meXfh69ZLZg\">Mike Hannigan\u003c/a> on \u003cem>Friends\u003c/em> (the mere thought of which has me laughing out loud as I write this…seriously, what’s wrong with me?). I'm even drawn to him when he isn’t being totally hilarious, when \u003ca href=\"http://rookiemag.com/2012/01/ask-a-grown-man-2/\">he's giving advice to teenage girls\u003c/a> or \u003ca href=\"http://www.nbc.com/saturday-night-live/video/7-minutes-in-heaven-paul-rudd/n28643/\">hanging out in a closet with some guy\u003c/a>. I can only credit the strength of my mostly reasonable intellect with just barely overriding the warm feelings I experience when I see him acting like someone's idiot brother, or posing \u003ca href=\"http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa263/murderlegendre/New%20Album/paul_rudd.jpg\">in jokingly seductive photo shoots\u003c/a>. And if I’d known he was \u003ca href=\"http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/11/20/paul-rudd-grace_n_2164613.html\">in a Broadway play\u003c/a>, well, I might have tried to figure out a way to see that.\u003cbr>\u003c/p>\u003cp>\u003cspan class='utils-parseShortcode-shortcodes-__youtubeShortcode__embedYoutube'>\n \u003cspan class='utils-parseShortcode-shortcodes-__youtubeShortcode__embedYoutubeInside'>\n \u003ciframe\n loading='lazy'\n class='utils-parseShortcode-shortcodes-__youtubeShortcode__youtubePlayer'\n type='text/html'\n src='//www.youtube.com/embed/XWX4GUYGQXQ'\n title='//www.youtube.com/embed/XWX4GUYGQXQ'\n allowfullscreen='true'\n style='border:0;'>\u003c/iframe>\n \u003c/span>\n \u003c/span>\u003c/p>\u003cp>\u003cp>Countless PhD students have written \u003ca href=\"http://people.wcsu.edu/mccarneyh/acad/Camella.html\">their dissertations\u003c/a> on the phenomenon of parasocial relationships and I’m embarrassed to say apparently I’m a textbook case. The formation of these bonds has to do with factors too varied and complex to fully explore here. These include how many hours are spent viewing, the comfort of the celebrity’s persona and their assimilation into our lives through their work and general cultural presence. There are myriad film and television techniques that create bonds without us even noticing. How unusual and intimate to spend so many hours staring at someone's face, from this angle and that, without ever looking away as we would in real life. The constant casual discussion of celebrities is a shorthand that increases feelings of familiarity too. I've been talking to people about Paul Rudd for the last few days because of this article, and when he \u003ca href=\"http://www.justjared.com/tags/julie-yaeger/\">appeared on the Oscar's\u003c/a> Sunday night, I nearly lost it. The beard! The rumpled tuxedo! What's my friend doing at the Oscar's?\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>This isn’t my dissertation, but it’s safe to say things are getting a bit pathological if you think the soap star playing the doctor can give you medical advice or that \u003ca href=\"http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w6XGUhzfutc\">no real man will ever live up to the one in the romantic comedy\u003c/a> (and people do take it that far). But it’s also safe to say that most of us operate somewhere more reasonable, but definitely \u003cem>somewhere\u003c/em>, within this spectrum of one-sided familiarity. These confusions are perhaps unavoidable, not so much a sign of one person’s fragile, overactive psyche as they are a by-product of being inundated and compelled by stories that are so often creating idealized, relatable, or serialized worlds.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>In an informal and unscientifically conducted poll I’ve encountered the following data:\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>-Someone who is mad at Justin Bieber for \u003ca href=\"http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-2270735/Selena-Gomez-hints-possible-Justin-Bieber-break-song-takes-studio.html\">how it all went down with Selena Gomez\u003c/a>.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>-Someone who thinks she might have been the one who could’ve given the right sort of tough love to \u003ca href=\"http://www.writing.upenn.edu/~afilreis/88v/kerouac-technique.html\">Jack Kerouac\u003c/a>.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>-Someone drawn to \u003ca href=\"http://hollywoodeastconnection.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/burnnotice-thumb-570x390-2590.jpg\">spies\u003c/a> who know how to feign weakness but ultimately triumph.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>-Someone who became an extra in a \u003ca href=\"https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YkjtGovd-nw\">James Franco film\u003c/a> because she felt sure they’d have a connection.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>-Someone sure that she and \u003ca href=\"http://shechive.files.wordpress.com/2012/07/celeb-rundown-36.jpg\">Mindy Kaling\u003c/a> would have an amazing time hanging out.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cimg class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-110098\" src=\"https://ww2.kqed.org/pop/wp-content/uploads/sites/12/2013/02/Paul-Rudd-Oh-OK.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\">\u003c/p>\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: center\">\n\u003c/p>\u003cp>So Paul and I are not the only ones who have this intimacy at a distance, which makes me feel better. Our parasocial relationships speak to the qualities in others that appeal and resonate in revealing ways. We form impressions of celebrities like we do with anyone else. \u003ca href=\"http://encyclopedia.jrank.org/articles/pages/6428/Attachment-to-Media-Characters.html\">Empathy plays an interesting role\u003c/a> in these relationships too, with those of us who display stronger feelings of empathy often creating stronger parasocial bonds as well. Empathy is what truly involves us in stories, and in the lives of other people, fictional and not. So it makes sense that the inclination toward parasocial connection actually makes stories better, more urgent and more engaging. On a fundamental level we care more when we're connected more and vice versa. It’s an intriguing and particular human tendency to identify so strongly with what we see in these total strangers and the stories around them. We entangle ourselves, emotionally and psychologically, in our attraction and identification, in our desire to relate and empathize.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>http://www.funnyordie.com/videos/626177adb2/paul-rudd-pitches-harvey-weinstein\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The notion of the parasocial suggests that people are not just passive viewers. We really do seek out what speaks to us, yet we also have a profound inability and unwillingness to acknowledge the media's influence on us at the same time. I definitely feel that duality. I tell people about my BFF Paul Rudd with high levels of self-deprecation, irony and disclaimers. Because it doesn’t count if I’m aware of it, right? But it also happened without me being aware of it. And at the end of the day, I really do feel it. That’s the confession, the psychology, the fascination.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\u003c/div>",
