In a newsroom career that began in Chicago in 1972, Dan has worked for \u003cem>The San Francisco Examiner,\u003c/em> Wired and TechTV and has been published in The New York Times, The New York Times Magazine, Business 2.0, Salon and elsewhere.\r\n\r\nSince joining KQED in 2007, Dan has reported, edited and produced both radio and online features and breaking news pieces. "content": "\u003cp>\u003cstrong>Update Friday\u003c/strong>: The Chronicle reported today that \u003ca href=\"http://www.sfgate.com/news/article/S-F-Zoo-enclosure-where-gorilla-died-needs-5891682.php\" target=\"_blank\">safety issues\u003c/a> related to a different door in the gorilla enclosure than the one that killed 16-month-old Kabibe last week at the San Francisco Zoo have cropped up over the past several years.\u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>Zoo officials would not respond to questions Thursday about the gorilla exhibit. But the exhibit’s night quarters have a history of mechanical failures and safety issues, including an incident two years ago when a gorilla was injured by an electric door, according to zoo records obtained by The Chronicle.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>On July 16, 2012, an adult gorilla named Monifa had her right hand pinched under a door, cutting the base of all four of her fingers, according to a zoo report. She was treated by veterinarians, and mechanics adjusted the door — which was not the same one that killed Kabibe.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>On March 4, 2013, the same door that injured Monifa jammed and had to be pried open with a crowbar, records show. The same door then unexpectedly collapsed earlier this year. “Electric door 5 crashed down in AM while securing gorillas,” stated a Feb. 22 report. “No one injured just upset by noise.”\u003c/p>\u003c/blockquote>\n\u003cp>The Chronicle also said the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which enforces the \u003ca href=\"http://awic.nal.usda.gov/government-and-professional-resources/federal-laws/animal-welfare-act\" target=\"_blank\">Animal Welfare Act\u003c/a>, is investigating Kabibe’s death. But the exhibit’s night quarters have a history of mechanical failures and safety issues, including an incident two years ago when a gorilla was injured by an electric door, according to zoo records obtained by The Chronicle.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>On July 16, 2012, an adult gorilla named Monifa had her right hand pinched under a door, cutting the base of all four of her fingers, according to a zoo report. She was treated by veterinarians, and mechanics adjusted the door — which was not the same one that killed Kabibe.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>On March 4, 2013, the same door that injured Monifa jammed and had to be pried open with a crowbar, records show. The same door then unexpectedly collapsed earlier this year. “Electric door 5 crashed down in AM while securing gorillas,” stated a Feb. 22 report. “No one injured just upset by noise.”\u003c/p>\u003c/blockquote>\n\u003cp>The Chronicle also said the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which enforces the \u003ca href=\"http://awic.nal.usda.gov/government-and-professional-resources/federal-laws/animal-welfare-act\" target=\"_blank\">Animal Welfare Act\u003c/a>, is investigating Kabibe’s death. The zoo also says:\u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>These gorillas can weigh up to 440 pounds and stand four to five feet when standing upright on two feet ... Western lowland gorillas are the smallest of the four gorilla subspecies with a brownish-grey coat with red highlights. Adult males have silver-colored fur on their backs and legs, which is the origin of the name silverback.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>They are herbivores and enjoy plant-based diets that include fruit, vegetables, leaf-based browse, bark, grain and tubers. They live in family groups called troops averaging four to six members that are led by a dominant older male and consist of multiple females, juveniles and young males. Females begin reproduction at age nine or ten and do not produce many offspring. Female gorillas have a pregnancy term of nearly nine months and usually give birth to one infant. "content": "\u003cp>SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A beloved squirrel monkey known as Banana Sam was returned scared but safe to the San Francisco Zoo on Saturday night, two days after he was taken.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Banana Sam was \"hungry, trembling and thirsty,\" after police returned him to the zoo, but a full physical examination showed he was healthy, zoo spokesman Danny Latham said in a statement.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The 17-year-old monkey was found at Stern Grove, a park about a mile from the zoo, police spokesman Carlos Manfredi said.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The monkey was found by a bystander who saw him come out of the bushes.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"He managed to coax the monkey into his backpack,\" Manfredi said.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>[ad fullwidth]\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The man called police, and within an hour they met with zoo officials, who verified the monkey's identity.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"We are so thankful to the community and to the San Francisco Police Department for this happy ending,\" zoo director Tanya Peterson said in a statement. \"I know it's been extremely stressful for zoo staff during this time but we are grateful Banana Sam is back at the zoo where he belongs.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>No one has been arrested and no suspects have been identified.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"We're looking at every possible avenue, including the bystander,\" Manfredi said.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Banana Sam's theft Thursday prompted the zoo to boost security and keep the other 17 squirrel monkeys indoors.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>He was taken after thieves cut through a gate and made holes in the mesh surrounding the monkey exhibit.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>A $5,000 reward had been offered for his safe return.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The two-pound, one-foot-tall Banana Sam at 17 is an elder among squirrel monkeys, whose lifespan is about 20 years.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Common squirrel monkeys like him are not endangered, and are often seen in pet markets and medical research. While some states allow keeping monkeys as pets, in California it is illegal.\u003c/p>\n\n",

"content": "\u003cdiv class=\"post-body\">\u003cp>\u003cp>SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A beloved squirrel monkey known as Banana Sam was returned scared but safe to the San Francisco Zoo on Saturday night, two days after he was taken.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Banana Sam was \"hungry, trembling and thirsty,\" after police returned him to the zoo, but a full physical examination showed he was healthy, zoo spokesman Danny Latham said in a statement.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The 17-year-old monkey was found at Stern Grove, a park about a mile from the zoo, police spokesman Carlos Manfredi said.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The monkey was found by a bystander who saw him come out of the bushes.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"He managed to coax the monkey into his backpack,\" Manfredi said.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\u003c/div>",

"content": "\u003cdiv class=\"post-body\">\u003cp>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The man called police, and within an hour they met with zoo officials, who verified the monkey's identity.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"We are so thankful to the community and to the San Francisco Police Department for this happy ending,\" zoo director Tanya Peterson said in a statement. \"I know it's been extremely stressful for zoo staff during this time but we are grateful Banana Sam is back at the zoo where he belongs.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>No one has been arrested and no suspects have been identified.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"We're looking at every possible avenue, including the bystander,\" Manfredi said.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Banana Sam's theft Thursday prompted the zoo to boost security and keep the other 17 squirrel monkeys indoors.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>He was taken after thieves cut through a gate and made holes in the mesh surrounding the monkey exhibit.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>A $5,000 reward had been offered for his safe return.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The two-pound, one-foot-tall Banana Sam at 17 is an elder among squirrel monkeys, whose lifespan is about 20 years.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Common squirrel monkeys like him are not endangered, and are often seen in pet markets and medical research. While some states allow keeping monkeys as pets, in California it is illegal.\u003c/p>\n\n\u003c/div>\u003c/p>",

The tiger had scaled the wall in which she was enclosed, killing Sousa and injuring his two companions, Paul and Kulbir Dhaliwal. The Dhaliwals \u003ca href=\"http://articles.sfgate.com/2009-05-29/bay-area/17201038_1_siberian-tiger-named-tatiana-kulbir-dhaliwal-zoo-cafe\">settled\u003c/a> a lawsuit against the zoo in 2009 for $900,000.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The documents, which AP obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request, include statements from police responding to the attack, as well as from others who witnessed the event. Here's just part of one hair-raising account by an officer who shot and killed the tiger:\u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>...The tiger then stopped attacking the man and began trotting quickly towards us, almost at a running pace. I began to become extremely fearful for the safety of Officer Biggs, myself, and the zoo employee inside our vehicle. As the tiger was approaching us, he looked in my direction and began walking directly towards me. I was extremely fearful for my safety as the tiger's speed began to increase in my direction. At this time I fired my Department issued firearm in an attempt to save my life and the lives of Officer Biggs and the zoo employee. I fired my firearm an unknown number of times with little effect on the tiger. The tiger was approximately two and a half feet from me when I jumped back into our vehicle. I then realized that my window was completely open and the tiger was directly next to my door. Still fearing for my life, I fired my firearm again. The tiger fell to the ground and I could see that the tiger was attempting to get back up. I then heard a gunshot and saw that the tiger was no longer moving. I exited the vehicle and determined that the tiger was dead. \u003c/p>\u003c/blockquote>\n\u003cp>Some of the documents may also help buttress the zoo's claim that the tiger, Tatiana, was provoked by the Dhaliwals. Here's what an expert with the Dept of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service wrote in a report about the incident, as reported by AP:\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c!--more-->\u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>\"It appears the tiger was able to jump from the bottom of the dry moat to the top of the wall, and gain enough purchase over the top to pull herself out over the moat wall,\" wrote Laurie Gage, a tiger expert who investigated the scene for the United States Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, or APHIS, which oversees the nation's zoos.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"With my knowledge of tiger behavior I cannot imagine a tiger trying to jump out of its enclosure unless it was provoked,\" Gage wrote in the Dec. 27, 2007 draft of her report.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>That statement was stricken from the final version of the report because it was \"irrelevant from an Animal Welfare Act enforcement standpoint,\" said David Sacks, a spokesman for APHIS. Whether or not the tiger was provoked has long been a point of contention.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>After sitting with its prey for a short time, Gage wrote that Tatiana likely followed the Dhaliwals' blood trail for about 300 yards to where it resumed attacks. Photographs show blood-smeared asphalt where the tiger apparently dragged Sousa's body.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"After a kill, I find it interesting the tiger would leave a kill to go after something else unless there were a compelling reason,\" Gage wrote. \"The tiger passed exhibits with warthogs . which it ignored as it followed (the blood trail?) of the two brothers to the Terrace Cafe outside the dining area.\"\u003c/p>\u003c/blockquote>\n\u003cp>\u003ca name=\"docs\">Here are some of the documents, which the San Jose Mercury News \u003c/a>\u003ca href=\"http://www.mercurynews.com/ci_17383101\">posted\u003c/a> on its site. I exited the vehicle and determined that the tiger was dead. \u003c/p>\u003c/blockquote>\n\u003cp>Some of the documents may also help buttress the zoo's claim that the tiger, Tatiana, was provoked by the Dhaliwals. Here's what an expert with the Dept of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service wrote in a report about the incident, as reported by AP:\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c!--more-->\u003c/p>\n\u003cblockquote>\u003cp>\"It appears the tiger was able to jump from the bottom of the dry moat to the top of the wall, and gain enough purchase over the top to pull herself out over the moat wall,\" wrote Laurie Gage, a tiger expert who investigated the scene for the United States Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, or APHIS, which oversees the nation's zoos.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"With my knowledge of tiger behavior I cannot imagine a tiger trying to jump out of its enclosure unless it was provoked,\" Gage wrote in the Dec. 27, 2007 draft of her report.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>That statement was stricken from the final version of the report because it was \"irrelevant from an Animal Welfare Act enforcement standpoint,\" said David Sacks, a spokesman for APHIS. Whether or not the tiger was provoked has long been a point of contention.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>After sitting with its prey for a short time, Gage wrote that Tatiana likely followed the Dhaliwals' blood trail for about 300 yards to where it resumed attacks. Photographs show blood-smeared asphalt where the tiger apparently dragged Sousa's body.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"After a kill, I find it interesting the tiger would leave a kill to go after something else unless there were a compelling reason,\" Gage wrote. \"The tiger passed exhibits with warthogs . which it ignored as it followed (the blood trail?) of the two brothers to the Terrace Cafe outside the dining area.\"\u003c/p>\u003c/blockquote>\n\u003cp>\u003ca name=\"docs\">Here are some of the documents, which the San Jose Mercury News \u003c/a>\u003ca href=\"http://www.mercurynews.com/ci_17383101\">posted\u003c/a> on its site. "content": "\u003cp>The San Francisco Examiner has an exclusive today on a case that has gone mostly forgotten: the San Francisco Zoo's \u003ca href=\"http://www.kqed.org/a/forum/R712270900\" target=\"_blank\">Christmas Day 2007 tiger attack\u003c/a> that left two young men mauled and a friend and the tiger dead. The Examiner's story—running under the sophomoric headline \"\u003ca href=\"http://www.sfexaminer.com/local/bay-area/2010/11/tiger-attack-tapes-turn-tasty-treat\">Tiger attack tapes turn up tasty treat\u003c/a>\"—reports the details of the San Francisco police interview with the two survivors of the attack, Kulbir and Amritpal “Paul” Dhaliwal. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>From the first, \u003ca href=\"http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2007/12/27/MNABU4Q5T.DTL\" target=\"_blank\">the investigation focused \u003c/a>on two areas: 1) had the three victims taunted the animal (a Siberian tiger named Tatiana), perhaps prompting the attack; and 2) how in the world had the animal managed to get out of its quarters. The answer to 2) turned out to be straightforward: The zoo's big cat enclosures \u003ca href=\"http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2007/12/28/MNSKU5OFE.DTL\" target=\"_blank\">were not up to standard\u003c/a>—not high enough and not sophisticated enough to prevent the tiger from bounding across a protective moat.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The answer to 1) has always been more elusive. In time, \u003ca href=\"http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2008/01/18/MNEIUH4B9.DTL\" target=\"_blank\">reports surfaced\u003c/a> that the Dhaliwal brothers had been baiting the tiger before she climbed out of the enclosure. The police disclosed, and eventually the brothers admitted, that they and the friend the tiger killed, Carlos Sousa Jr., had been drinking and smoking marijuana before the attack. The zoo hired a spin doctor who pushed the story that the victims had provoked the attack. (The Dhaliwals eventually sued the city, both for negligence and harassment related to the attack and for slander and libel. The \u003ca href=\"http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2009/05/29/BAPS17T0BD.DTL\" target=\"_blank\">city settled the suit \u003c/a>last year for $900,000.)\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>So what's the Examiner's contribution to the tale? Here it is: The Dhaliwals were eating nachos, they told police. But no, they didn't toss any to Tatiana. The Examiner's story—running under the sophomoric headline \"\u003ca href=\"http://www.sfexaminer.com/local/bay-area/2010/11/tiger-attack-tapes-turn-tasty-treat\">Tiger attack tapes turn up tasty treat\u003c/a>\"—reports the details of the San Francisco police interview with the two survivors of the attack, Kulbir and Amritpal “Paul” Dhaliwal. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>From the first, \u003ca href=\"http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2007/12/27/MNABU4Q5T.DTL\" target=\"_blank\">the investigation focused \u003c/a>on two areas: 1) had the three victims taunted the animal (a Siberian tiger named Tatiana), perhaps prompting the attack; and 2) how in the world had the animal managed to get out of its quarters. The answer to 2) turned out to be straightforward: The zoo's big cat enclosures \u003ca href=\"http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2007/12/28/MNSKU5OFE.DTL\" target=\"_blank\">were not up to standard\u003c/a>—not high enough and not sophisticated enough to prevent the tiger from bounding across a protective moat.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The answer to 1) has always been more elusive. In time, \u003ca href=\"http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2008/01/18/MNEIUH4B9.DTL\" target=\"_blank\">reports surfaced\u003c/a> that the Dhaliwal brothers had been baiting the tiger before she climbed out of the enclosure. The police disclosed, and eventually the brothers admitted, that they and the friend the tiger killed, Carlos Sousa Jr., had been drinking and smoking marijuana before the attack. The zoo hired a spin doctor who pushed the story that the victims had provoked the attack. (The Dhaliwals eventually sued the city, both for negligence and harassment related to the attack and for slander and libel. The \u003ca href=\"http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2009/05/29/BAPS17T0BD.DTL\" target=\"_blank\">city settled the suit \u003c/a>last year for $900,000.)\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>So what's the Examiner's contribution to the tale? Here it is: The Dhaliwals were eating nachos, they told police. But no, they didn't toss any to Tatiana.
