"bio": "Amanda joined KQED Science’s engagement team as a Senior Audience Engagement Strategist in the spring of 2019. She has helped craft messaging around wildfires, the coronavirus pandemic, climate change and many other stories. She has also brought KQED Science to new platforms such as Reddit’s Ask Me Anything series. Prior to joining KQED Science, Amanda spent seven years as an engagement producer with Forum, KQED’s daily live call-in show. She got her start in radio at KALW's weekly call in show, City Visions, before going on to an internship and stint at NPR's Talk of the Nation.\r\n\r\nPrior to journalism, Amanda taught English at Lowell High School. She's a native of Petaluma and currently lives under the \"South San Francisco the Industrial City\" sign in South City. Apologies.)\u003ca href=\"http://sanfrancisco.giants.mlb.com/index.jsp?c_id=sf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> The Giants\u003c/a> opened on the road, losing to the Los Angeles Dodgers 2-1.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cstrong>The Once and Future Athletics\u003c/strong>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cstrong>\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: normal\">As much as \u003ca href=\"http://www.flickr.com/groups/giantsfever/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the entire Bay Area seemed to go berzerk\u003c/a> for the Giants last year, much of the \u003ca href=\"http://www.npr.org/2011/03/31/135002300/baseball-update\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pre-season prognostics\u003c/a> have been about the A’s. Remember them? The team that seemed to slide into oblivion last year (if you count being the subject of a \u003ca href=\"http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1210166/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">movie staring Brad Pitt\u003c/a> “oblivion”). \u003c/span>\u003c/strong>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cstrong>\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: normal\">Many folks are pointing to the strength of the \u003ca href=\"http://bleacherreport.com/articles/649720-2011-mlb-predictions-players-to-watch-and-postseason-locks/entry/57571-2011-mlb-predictions-count-on-the-oakland-athletics-to-win-the-al-west\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A’s starting rotation\u003c/a> and the addition of designated hitter Hideki Matsui as key components to getting the A’s back on the winning track. Maybe we don’t want your team to fall apart. But if two or three wheels came off the wagon while barreling down championship hill, dumping a few thousand people who wouldn’t know Orlando Cepeda from Orlando, Fla., onto their freshly painted orange heads, you’d see no tears over here.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Jealous? Hell yes, we’re jealous. And hell no, we won’t wear orange and black, even if it is Halloween.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>But here’s the real torture for us. You have a future. We don’t. Not as the “Oakland” A’s.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>A’s fans don’t want to celebrate what Giants fans have — a shiny new stadium, great attendance, a successful team that can poke out a run or two and an ownership that actually embraces the main fanbase. We want it to ourselves. A’s fans watched in the background as the Giants broke ground on Pac Bell SBC AT&T Park, made the World Series run in 2002 and as they cheered for every Barry Bonds blast that went kerplunk into McCovey Cove. And really, we’re just as sick of the torture as you are.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>We’ve been watching and perhaps even taking a silent interest in your playoff run. But your bandwagon is far too crowded. Maybe we don’t want your team to fall apart. But if two or three wheels came off the wagon while barreling down championship hill, dumping a few thousand people who wouldn’t know Orlando Cepeda from Orlando, Fla., onto their freshly painted orange heads, you’d see no tears over here.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Jealous? Hell yes, we’re jealous. And hell no, we won’t wear orange and black, even if it is Halloween.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>But here’s the real torture for us. You have a future. We don’t. Not as the “Oakland” A’s.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>A’s fans don’t want to celebrate what Giants fans have — a shiny new stadium, great attendance, a successful team that can poke out a run or two and an ownership that actually embraces the main fanbase. We want it to ourselves. A’s fans watched in the background as the Giants broke ground on Pac Bell SBC AT&T Park, made the World Series run in 2002 and as they cheered for every Barry Bonds blast that went kerplunk into McCovey Cove.
