"bio": "Dan Brekke is a reporter and editor for KQED News, responsible for coverage of topics ranging from California water issues to the Bay Area's transportation challenges. In a newsroom career that began in Chicago in 1972, Dan has worked for \u003cem>The San Francisco Examiner,\u003c/em> Wired and TechTV and has been published in The New York Times, The New York Times Magazine, Business 2.0, Salon and elsewhere.\r\n\r\nSince joining KQED in 2007, Dan has reported, edited and produced both radio and online features and breaking news pieces. He has shared as both editor and reporter in four Society of Professional Journalists Norcal Excellence in Journalism awards and one Edward R. Murrow regional award. Prior to creating the show, he served as the station's morning news anchor for five-and-half years.\r\n\r\nPrior to joining KQED, Joshua spent six years as an anchor/reporter for WLRN Miami Herald News. He's a native of South Florida, with degrees from the University of Miami. His reporting and newscasting have won awards from the Radio Television Digital News Association and from the National Association of Black Journalists. Joshua is also active in his union, SAG-AFTRA. He lives in San Francisco.",

"bio": "• I write and edit stories about how Silicon Valley power and policies shape everyday life in California. I’m also passionate about making Bay Area history and culture more accessible to a broad public. • I’ve been a journalist for most of my life, starting in high school with The Franklin Press in Los Angeles, where I grew up. While earning my first degree in English at UC Berkeley, I got my start in public radio at KALX-FM. After completing a second degree in journalism at Cal, I landed my first professional job at Marketplace, then moved on to KPCC (now LAist), and then KQED, where I hosted The California Report for more than seven years. • My reporting has appeared on NPR, The World, WBUR’s \u003ci>Here & Now\u003c/i>, and the BBC. The \u003ca href=\"http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/recenteqsus/Quakes/nc71746766.html\">U.S. Geological Survey reported the temblor\u003c/a> at 5:33 a.m. centered 5.5 miles below a country club in El Cerrito. Aftershocks of 2.0 and 1.1 magnitude followed.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Some in the East Bay say the quake jolted them awake. Others in San Francisco felt two sharp shakes. A computer glitch mistakenly registered the one quake as two, with a false report in southern Marin County near Belvedere. USGS quickly removed that report from its website.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>History does give some indication that earthquakes can presage larger ones to come - \"foreshocks\", rather than aftershocks. But this one was probably not strong enough to be a foreshock.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"If we had a magnitude five, then a warning would go out that within the next 72 hours there's a 5-10% chance of something larger occurring,\" says Dr. David Schwartz, an earthquake geologist with USGS. \"And this is based on California-wide earthquake staistics. "content": "\u003cp>(Bay City News) SANTA ROSA — A Novato woman thought to be the oldest of three known remaining survivors of the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake has died at the age of 109.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Rose Cliver passed away Saturday in Santa Rosa, according to Lee Houskeeper, publicist for San Francisco restaurant John’s Grill. The restaurant hosts an annual Great San Francisco Earthquake and Fire Commemoration event honoring earthquake survivors.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Cliver will be toasted at a lunch today at noon at John’s Grill, Houskeeper said. This year’s April 18 earthquake breakfast will also be dedicated to her memory.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Cliver was thought to be one of only three remaining survivors of the 1906 quake. Corbett and other legislators called for the audit of the state architect’s office in May after a \u003ca href=\"http://californiawatch.org/k-12/lax-oversight-school-construction-raises-quake-safety-doubts-9537\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">California Watch\u003c/a> investigation found that the agency routinely failed to enforce California’s landmark earthquake safety law for public schools – known as the Field Act – and allowed children and teachers to occupy buildings with structural flaws and potential safety hazards reported during construction.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>State auditors found that the state architect’s office rarely used the enforcement tools it possesses, didn’t adequately document the safety issues it identified and didn’t prioritize projects with safety concerns. The report also noted breakdowns in the state’s oversight of inspectors.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>More than 16,000 school projects currently lack Field Act certification, and at least \u003ca href=\"https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/83255-02-proposal-leg-certification-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">59,000 more\u003c/a> have yet to be fully reviewed by the state architect’s office to identify their Field Act status.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Before becoming state architect, Widom served as \u003ca href=\"http://www.aia.org/press/AIAB086837\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">national president\u003c/a> of the American Institute of Architects in 1995. "content": "\u003cp>A cluster of recent earthquakes in Berkeley over the past two weeks has made local residents nervous about \"the big one.\" There’s even been some \u003ca href=\"http://www.mercurynews.com/bay-area-news/ci_19234288\">misinformation circulating\u003c/a> about the risk is of an earthquake in the East Bay.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>To clear things up, I spoke with Keith Knudsen of the \u003ca href=\"http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/\">USGS Earthquake Science Center\u003c/a> about what we know and what we don’t know about a major earthquake hitting the Bay Area.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cstrong>Does a sequence of small earthquakes mean that a larger event is on its way?\u003c/strong>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>This really isn’t all that unusual for the Hayward Fault. At first, it seemed a little unusual but we’ve looked back into the recent records and there have been similar swarms of small earthquakes just in the last ten years. There was a swarm in 2006 and another in 2003 just a mile or two to the south.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cstrong>Phew. I feel better.\u003c/strong>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>[ad fullwidth]\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Well, any earthquake could be followed by a larger event. These earthquakes could be foreshocks. We don’t know if that’s the case here. It could be. And it wouldn’t be a surprise if we had a magnitude 7.0 on the Hayward Fault. But these recent events don’t make us think that there’s a heightened hazard of a larger quake.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cstrong>Are we due for a big earthquake on the Hayward Fault?\u003c/strong>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>We can’t predict earthquakes. The reason we don’t use that “p” word is that there really haven’t been patterns that tell us an event is imminent. We do longer term forecasts. Like, we believe there’s a 30% chance of an earthquake on Hayward Fault that’s 6.7 or greater in the next 30 years. But not in a two to three week window as some of these misinformed reports have said.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cstrong>How do we know that?\u003c/strong>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>We have a 12 earthquake record going back several thousands years on the southern Hayward Fault in Fremont, and those earthquakes are about 160 years apart on average. You add 160 years to 1868, when the last major earthquake occurred on the Hayward Fault, and we’re certainly in the window.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The Hayward fault is the most likely fault in the Bay Area to produce a large earthquake. But if you look at the entire Bay Area, there’s a two in three chance or 63% chance of a magnitude 6.7 or greater somewhere in the Bay Area in the next 30 years.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cstrong>What’s happening on the Hayward Fault?\u003c/strong>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>It’s a strike-slip fault, which means the two sides are sliding past each other horizontally. There’s not a lot of vertical motion. And it’s what we call a right lateral strike-slip. So if you stand on one side and look across to the other side, that side will move to the right during an earthquake. Over the long-term, that’s happening at a rate of about nine millimeters per year.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003cstrong>Do small earthquakes like these release stress on the fault and decrease the risk of a big quake?\u003c/strong>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>A lot of people ask that. These earthquakes are relatively small compared to a magnitude 7.0. The difference in energy released is huge. You’d need thousands of magnitude 3.5 to equal the amount of stress released by a 7.0. So they probably don’t do anything to release the hazard.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>These small quakes certainly aren’t a reason to panic. But anything that makes people better prepared is a good thing. So these are a little bit of a wake up call. We should all be prepared.\u003c/p>\n\n",
