Chris Christie, Florida Sen. Marco Rubio and Wisconsin Gov. In May, 2010, \u003ca href=\"http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KYiJ-_K9NCo\">President Obama visited the firm\u003c/a> and held it up as an example of the kind of green-energy company the administration was trying to cultivate. But in August of 2011, the \u003ca href=\"http://ww2.kqed.org/news/fremonts-solyndra-solar-tech-firm-suspends-operations-filing-bankruptcy/\">firm laid off about 1,100 workers and filed for bankruptcy\u003c/a>, providing Republicans with \u003ca href=\"http://ww2.kqed.org/news/2011/09/02/gop-makes-anti-obama-hay-out-of-solyndra-collapse-video-of-gop-ad/\">ready-made talking points\u003c/a> against some favorite targets: Obama, renewable energy, the stimulus bill, and government involvement in business in general.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>[ad fullwidth]\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>A series of negative revelations about the Solyndra loan, \u003ca href=\"http://www.gop.com/images/research/the_solyndra_file_book.pdf\">packaged by the Republican National Committee here\u003c/a>, have provided fodder for \u003ca href=\"http://ww2.kqed.org/news/2011/10/14/watch-live-now-house-solyndra-hearings/\">GOP-led House hearings\u003c/a> and \u003ca href=\"http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GrHAApqp8Cw\">negative advertising\u003c/a>. And a Treasury Dept Inspector General audit released in April was titled \"\u003ca href=\"http://www.treasury.gov/about/organizational-structure/ig/Agency%20Documents/OIG%20Audit%20Report%20%20-%20Consultation%20on%20Solyndra%20Loan%20Guarantee%20Was%20Rushed.pdf\">Consultation on Solyndra Loan Guarantee Was Rushed\u003c/a>.\" The report concluded that DOE may not have properly consulted with Treasury about the loan.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>And emails released to congressional investigators showed that a former Obama fundraiser who was an Energy Dept advisor \u003ca href=\"http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/10/07/obama-fundraiser-pushed-s_n_1000826.html\">pushed administration officials to finalize the loan\u003c/a> in time for a visit by VP Joe Biden to Solyndra's groundbreaking. The advisor, Steve Spinner, had pledged to stay out of the Solyndra deal because his wife's law firm represented the company.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>But, as CBS News reports today: \"Republicans have not found evidence to back up claims by some lawmakers that the loan was approved for political reasons.\" The fact-checking site \u003ca href=\"http://www.politifact.com/florida/statements/2011/nov/15/americans-prosperity/solyndra-ad-president-barack-obama-taxpayer-money/\">PolitiFact has a detailed entry on the Solyndra scandal\u003c/a>. Here's its conclusion about a TV ad that makes the same claim about crony capitalism, Solyndra and Obama that Romney made today. If the U.S. Supreme Court rejects the Obama Administration’s arguments and upholds Arizona’s tough immigration law, that could very well be the case.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003ca href=\"http://www.npr.org/blogs/thetwo-way/2012/04/25/151369422/justices-signal-support-for-arizona-immigration-law\">Judging by today’s oral arguments\u003c/a>, SCOTUS seems likely to uphold some if not all of the law, which allows Arizona police to seek citizenship documentation from drivers they pull over – and to arrest and detain those who can't provide it.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>If that happens, it could inflict serious damage on Mitt Romney’s chances of picking up the 40-45% of Latino voters he says he needs to win in November. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>During the primary Gov. Romney supported harsh measures to contain illegal immigration, including Arizona’s law. He’s also held up Scalia, Thomas, Alito and Roberts as the justices he admires most.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>As the general election approaches, Romney may try to pivot to the middle on immigration. But nothing mobilizes Latinos to vote (and non-voters to register and vote) like a perceived threat to their civil liberties. If the Arizona law is upheld, there is likely to be a surge in Latino voter registration in places like Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico and Nevada -- all swing states. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>[ad fullwidth]\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>You may recall California’s Prop. 187 in 1994. It led to a huge increase in Latino voter participation, most of whom voted Democratic, and the state GOP has never recovered. If the same happens in November, that’s bad news for Romney and the Republicans.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>You can \u003ca href=\"http://www.scribd.com/doc/91266750/scotusimmigration\">\u003cstrong>read the transcript of today's oral arguments in the case here\u003c/strong>\u003c/a>. If the U.S. Supreme Court rejects the Obama Administration’s arguments and upholds Arizona’s tough immigration law, that could very well be the case.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003ca href=\"http://www.npr.org/blogs/thetwo-way/2012/04/25/151369422/justices-signal-support-for-arizona-immigration-law\">Judging by today’s oral arguments\u003c/a>, SCOTUS seems likely to uphold some if not all of the law, which allows Arizona police to seek citizenship documentation from drivers they pull over – and to arrest and detain those who can't provide it.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>If that happens, it could inflict serious damage on Mitt Romney’s chances of picking up the 40-45% of Latino voters he says he needs to win in November. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>During the primary Gov. Romney supported harsh measures to contain illegal immigration, including Arizona’s law. He’s also held up Scalia, Thomas, Alito and Roberts as the justices he admires most.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>As the general election approaches, Romney may try to pivot to the middle on immigration. But nothing mobilizes Latinos to vote (and non-voters to register and vote) like a perceived threat to their civil liberties. If the Arizona law is upheld, there is likely to be a surge in Latino voter registration in places like Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico and Nevada -- all swing states. \u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\u003c/div>",
