"content": "\u003cp>Two more firefighters have become casualties of the big wildland blaze burning just outside Yosemite National Park.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Officials said one firefighter was transported to a hospital early Wednesday to undergo surgery for a broken leg suffered while battling the \u003ca href=\"https://inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/5927/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ferguson Fire\u003c/a>. A second firefighter suffered heat-related issues and was treated and released.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Last Saturday, Braden Varney, 36, a Cal Fire heavy equipment operator, was killed when his bulldozer overturned.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The blaze, which started late Friday in Mariposa County, is moving through dry brush and timber in the Sierra National Forest, along Yosemite's western edge. As of Wednesday morning, the fire had burned across 17,319 acres -- about 27 square miles -- and was 5 percent contained.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Cal Fire says the more than 1,800 firefighters battling the blaze are facing hot, dry conditions, and the agency says fire activity is expected to intensify over the next two days.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>[ad fullwidth]\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"It's gonna start getting hotter,\" said Cal Fire spokesman Richard Eagan. \"Hotter and drier usually isn't good for us as firefighters.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>As is often the case with California's wildland fires, the terrain is difficult.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"It's pretty steep, not really easily accessible by foot,\" Eagan said. \"So it's been challenging for the firefighters for sure.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Officials say monsoonal moisture that's expected to start pushing in from the south on Wednesday afternoon could pose another threat, with the possibility of thunderstorms that could produce gusty, erratic winds.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>U.S. Forest Service spokesman Jim Mackensen said fire commanders are keeping a close eye on the weather.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"We have meteorologists here watching the weather radar, and as they see storms moving in this direction, they will alert our people on the ground, and they will disengage from the fire and move to an area of safe refuge,\" he said.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The blaze has forced the closure of a portion of Highway 140, one of the key routes into Yosemite. And Mackensen said there's a chance the fire could burn into the park at some point.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"It's definitely a possibility based on the terrain,\" Mackensen said. \"The fire wants to try and travel up the south fork of the Merced River drainage, which does take it into the Wawona area [of Yosemite], and we are looking at that.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Park officials say all trails, campground, restaurants and lodges within Yosemite remain open, though smoke from the wildfire is polluting the air and limiting visibility. "content": "\u003cp>A deadly wildfire burning in the Sierra National Forest, west of Yosemite National Park, has scorched more than 4,000 acres of dry brush along rugged terrain, and is causing smoky, hazy conditions in Yosemite Valley.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The \u003ca href=\"https://inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/5927/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ferguson Fire\u003c/a>, which ignited late Friday evening, is being fueled by hot conditions and steep terrain, according to fire officials. It was only 2 percent contained as of early Sunday afternoon.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“The fire is burning in a very steep terrain,” said Sierra National Forest spokesman Alex Olow. “And given that, there is what we call roll out, which causes embers to roll down, which catches areas that haven’t burned yet, and of course they start to burn, which can cause the fire to grow in size.”\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Olow said high temperatures Saturday evening — hovering near 90 degrees Fahrenheit — also contributed to \u003ca href=\"https://www.kqed.org/science/1926996/something-else-adding-fuel-to-californias-fire-season-warmer-nights\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">difficult conditions overnight\u003c/a>, and those high temperatures remain a concern for firefighters as they continue to battle the blaze.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“Not only are they fighting a fire where they’re getting fairly close and experiencing that heat, but they’re also exerting and expending energies in extremely hot weather,” he said. “So safety is always a concern for the firefighters.”\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>[ad fullwidth]\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Early Saturday morning, 36-year old Heavy Fire Equipment Operator Braden Varney \u003ca href=\"https://www.kqed.org/news/11680606/firefighter-killed-fighting-blaze-near-yosemite\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">died battling the blaze\u003c/a>, when his bulldozer overturned.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“That does affect the morale of firefighters,” Olow said. “But we also know that we have a job that needs to get done, so we do work together to do that. We’ll take the time for mourning when we get the job done, even though it is on the [minds] of everybody as they are out there working.”\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Olow said fire officials are working to make sure no more casualties occur with firefighters keeping an eye on one another at all times while they battle the wildfire.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>According to Yosemite National Park officials, a stretch of California Highway 140 into the park remains closed due to the blaze, and they’re urging visitors to find alternate routes.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>https://twitter.com/YosemiteNPS/status/1018214768824315905\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Yosemite visitors should expect delays getting into the park due to the California Highway 140 closure.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“We’ve had some increased volume of traffic at the other gates because traffic has been rerouted,” said Yosemite National Park spokeswoman Jamie Richards. “It’s July in Yosemite, so traffic is already going to be busy, and with one of our main entrances closed, it’s added to the volume at the other entrances.”\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Officials shut off electricity to many areas as a safety precaution on Saturday, including Yosemite Valley — a popular area for tourists — forcing key areas in the park to rely on generator power. But park officials said on Sunday that commercial power has been restored to many areas.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“Most of the Valley is back on commercial power,” Richards said. “There may be places in the park that are still on generators, but Yosemite National Park is prepared for power outages for a variety of reasons, so you didn’t notice any interruption in your day.”\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Richards said because the fire has grown, visitors should be aware that there are impacts from smoke in the park. “If you are a visitor in Yosemite Valley, visibility has been impacted by smoke and haze in the "content": "\u003cdiv class=\"post-body\">\u003cp>\u003cp>A deadly wildfire burning in the Sierra National Forest, west of Yosemite National Park, has scorched more than 4,000 acres of dry brush along rugged terrain, and is causing smoky, hazy conditions in Yosemite Valley.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The \u003ca href=\"https://inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/5927/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ferguson Fire\u003c/a>, which ignited late Friday evening, is being fueled by hot conditions and steep terrain, according to fire officials. It was only 2 percent contained as of early Sunday afternoon.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“The fire is burning in a very steep terrain,” said Sierra National Forest spokesman Alex Olow. “And given that, there is what we call roll out, which causes embers to roll down, which catches areas that haven’t burned yet, and of course they start to burn, which can cause the fire to grow in size.”\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Olow said high temperatures Saturday evening — hovering near 90 degrees Fahrenheit — also contributed to \u003ca href=\"https://www.kqed.org/science/1926996/something-else-adding-fuel-to-californias-fire-season-warmer-nights\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">difficult conditions overnight\u003c/a>, and those high temperatures remain a concern for firefighters as they continue to battle the blaze.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“Not only are they fighting a fire where they’re getting fairly close and experiencing that heat, but they’re also exerting and expending energies in extremely hot weather,” he said. “So safety is always a concern for the firefighters.”\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\u003c/div>",

We’ll take the time for mourning when we get the job done, even though it is on the [minds] of everybody as they are out there working.”\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Olow said fire officials are working to make sure no more casualties occur with firefighters keeping an eye on one another at all times while they battle the wildfire.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>According to Yosemite National Park officials, a stretch of California Highway 140 into the park remains closed due to the blaze, and they’re urging visitors to find alternate routes.\u003c/p>\u003c/p>\u003c/div>",

But park officials said on Sunday that commercial power has been restored to many areas.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“Most of the Valley is back on commercial power,” Richards said. “There may be places in the park that are still on generators, but Yosemite National Park is prepared for power outages for a variety of reasons, so you didn’t notice any interruption in your day.”\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Richards said because the fire has grown, visitors should be aware that there are impacts from smoke in the park. “If you are a visitor in Yosemite Valley, visibility has been impacted by smoke and haze in the
