"content": "\u003cp>An Alameda County Superior Court judge has ordered a man accused of the fatal September 2014 knife attack on a 72-year-old woman near the Berkeley Zen Center to stand trial for murder.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Judge Rhonda Burgess on Wednesday ordered Kamau Berlin, who was 18 and a student at Berkeley Technology Academy at the time of his arrest, to return to court later this month for arraignment in the death of Nancy McClellan, 72. He will continue to be held without bail, Burgess said.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Berlin told his mother he had needed a ride home the day he was arrested near the car where Nancy McClellan, 72, was found bleeding from the neck due to a stab wound. He will continue to be held without bail, Burgess said.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Berlin told his mother he had needed a ride home the day he was arrested near the car where Nancy McClellan, 72, was found bleeding from the neck due to a stab wound. Police testified that, when his mother insisted during a jailhouse interview that he tell her the truth of what had happened, he said he had seen a woman in a car, started hitting her to get her out of the car, and then threw her into the backseat.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>He also mentioned to his mother having used brass knuckles during the attack, which ultimately helped police track down the murder weapon in the days after Berlin’s arrest.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>At the time of his arrest, he told police a red substance on him that looked like blood was actually “fake blood for Halloween.”\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\u003c/div>",

"content": "\u003cp>After years of speculation in Berkeley, the future closure of Alta Bates Hospital appears to be certain.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Sutter Health, owner of Alta Bates, said it will close the inpatient hospital and its emergency department sometime in advance of 2030, when state seismic standards kick in. Those standards require that all inpatient hospitals are built both to withstand a major quake and to remain fully operational after the event.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>In a statement, Sutter said that Alta Bates is \"not seismically compliant\" with the law, \u003ca href=\"http://www.oshpd.ca.gov/fdd/seismic_compliance/SB1953/\" target=\"_blank\">SB1953\u003c/a>. It plans to consolidate inpatient and emergency facilities at its Summit campus in Oakland.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Berkeley officials are concerned about the closure of its only emergency department. The Berkeley Fire Department and paramedics transported more than 5,000 patients to Alta Bates in the last year. Taking them to Summit in Oakland, 3 miles away, is expected to add 24 minutes to calls, fire officials say.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\"It increases the amount of time that (paramedics) have to spend transporting patients to the hospital,\" said Berkeley City Councilman Jesse Arreguin. \"It potentially puts people's lives at risk.\"\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>[ad fullwidth]\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Sutter Health, a nonprofit based in Sacramento, runs more than 25 hospitals across Northern California. "content": "\u003cp>For decades, Telegraph Avenue has been the Boulevard of Unconventional Berkeley — a bohemian enclave, then the Free Speech Movement, anti-Vietnam War, People’s Park, hippies, punks, street people. Before the Big Changes of the late 1960s, on Telegraph you could buy out-of-town and foreign-language newspapers, croissants, espresso drinks, Turkish cigarettes and Gauloises.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>You could watch foreign-language films at the Cinema Guild and Cinema Studio, and read what Pauline Kael had to say about the movies, and play chess, and everywhere was baroque music and folk music. There were boutiques and haberdasheries and art galleries and mom-and-pop grocery stores. And the used bookstores! What a world! We were Athens, this was our Bleecker Street, our Boulevard Saint-Michel with a touch, perhaps, of Bourbon Street and Dylan’s Desolation Row.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>And then came the Big Changes. Telegraph became a battlefield in the late 1960s, literally and culturally. Telegraph Avenue between Haste Street and Dwight Way was the epicenter of countercultural change in Berkeley, and there exists a striking photographic documentation of that block at that time by Nacio Jan Brown.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Brown arrived in Berkeley as a freshman at Cal in the fall of 1960. In 1965, he started to photograph Berkeley in earnest. …\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Many of Brown’s photographs documenting life on Telegraph Avenue were taken from the Med shooting across to the Rag Theatre clothing store, street level of an apartment house known not just a little facetiously as the Telegraph Hilton. His modus operandi was to arrive on the Avenue before the young people. Before the Big Changes of the late 1960s, on Telegraph you could buy out-of-town and foreign-language newspapers, croissants, espresso drinks, Turkish cigarettes and Gauloises.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>You could watch foreign-language films at the Cinema Guild and Cinema Studio, and read what Pauline Kael had to say about the movies, and play chess, and everywhere was baroque music and folk music. There were boutiques and haberdasheries and art galleries and mom-and-pop grocery stores. And the used bookstores! What a world! We were Athens, this was our Bleecker Street, our Boulevard Saint-Michel with a touch, perhaps, of Bourbon Street and Dylan’s Desolation Row.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>And then came the Big Changes. Telegraph became a battlefield in the late 1960s, literally and culturally. Telegraph Avenue between Haste Street and Dwight Way was the epicenter of countercultural change in Berkeley, and there exists a striking photographic documentation of that block at that time by Nacio Jan Brown.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Brown arrived in Berkeley as a freshman at Cal in the fall of 1960. In 1965, he started to photograph Berkeley in earnest. …\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Many of Brown’s photographs documenting life on Telegraph Avenue were taken from the Med shooting across to the Rag Theatre clothing store, street level of an apartment house known not just a little facetiously as the Telegraph Hilton. His modus operandi was to arrive on the Avenue before the young people. It was 4:30 p.m. on a Friday. McClellan had been attending a wedding at the nearby Berkeley Zen Center, where she was a member and also a gardener.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Witnesses in the area, both civilians and police officers, testified Tuesday as the preliminary hearing in the case began before Judge Rhonda Burgess. Two neighbors saw a young man matching Berlin’s description in the immediate vicinity of the Honda, at Otis and Russell streets, but neither saw the man’s face or felt they had seen it clearly enough to identify Berlin with certainty. Another witness saw a man matching his description running from the scene but, again, did not see his face.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>A Berkeley police officer who arrived on Otis, just south of Russell, testified Tuesday he made eye contact with Berlin minutes after the initial call came into dispatch. The officer, Christopher Schulz, said Berlin was walking casually down the street. The two made eye contact after Schulz pulled up in his police cruiser. Then Berlin took off running, said Schulz, hopping a 6-foot wrought-iron security gate to access a backyard on Otis before jumping a wooden fence onto a detached garage and disappearing westbound toward Martin Luther King Jr. Way. Two neighbors saw a young man matching Berlin’s description in the immediate vicinity of the Honda, at Otis and Russell streets, but neither saw the man’s face or felt they had seen it clearly enough to identify Berlin with certainty. Another witness saw a man matching his description running from the scene but, again, did not see his face.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>A Berkeley police officer who arrived on Otis, just south of Russell, testified Tuesday he made eye contact with Berlin minutes after the initial call came into dispatch. The officer, Christopher Schulz, said Berlin was walking casually down the street. The two made eye contact after Schulz pulled up in his police cruiser. Then Berlin took off running, said Schulz, hopping a 6-foot wrought-iron security gate to access a backyard on Otis before jumping a wooden fence onto a detached garage and disappearing westbound toward Martin Luther King Jr. Way. "content": "\u003cp>A 53-foot pile of dirt in Berkeley’s McLaughlin Eastshore State Park is set to be lowered by 15 feet and spread around the parkland as part of renovations to improve the area.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The East Bay Regional Park District is slated to start work on the project this week. The dirt will be spread between the Seabreeze Market and Brickyard Cove.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“Trails, a picnic area, debris removal, native plant seeding and shoreline restoration are part of the long-term plan,” EBRPD said in a prepared statement. “In all, the Park District plans to move more than 100,000 cubic yards of dirt.”\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The dirt pile has been around for about a decade, and came from excavation projects around the Bay Area, including El Cerrito High School’s sports fields and UC Berkeley’s Memorial Stadium.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>A “very small portion” that is contaminated will be removed. Several smaller hills will be created “to buffer the park from the freeway and create views for bird-watching and enjoying the scenery,” according to EBRPD.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>[ad fullwidth]\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>Starting Wednesday, the Brickyard Cove area will be closed for several months while work is underway. "content": "\u003cdiv class=\"post-body\">\u003cp>\u003cp>A 53-foot pile of dirt in Berkeley’s McLaughlin Eastshore State Park is set to be lowered by 15 feet and spread around the parkland as part of renovations to improve the area.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The East Bay Regional Park District is slated to start work on the project this week. The dirt will be spread between the Seabreeze Market and Brickyard Cove.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>“Trails, a picnic area, debris removal, native plant seeding and shoreline restoration are part of the long-term plan,” EBRPD said in a prepared statement. “In all, the Park District plans to move more than 100,000 cubic yards of dirt.”\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>The dirt pile has been around for about a decade, and came from excavation projects around the Bay Area, including El Cerrito High School’s sports fields and UC Berkeley’s Memorial Stadium.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>A “very small portion” that is contaminated will be removed. Several smaller hills will be created “to buffer the park from the freeway and create views for bird-watching and enjoying the scenery,” according to EBRPD.\u003c/p>\n\u003cp>\u003c/p>\u003c/div>",
