The Fracking Debate Heats Up In California
KQED Newsroom takes an in-depth look at the fracking debate with a special edition exploring the science behind the extraction technique and the social, environmental and political landscape shaping its use and regulation in the future. Reporters Gabriela Quiros and Lauren Sommer travel to San Benito County, CA, to hear from grassroots activists who are campaigning hard to ban fracking, even though the practice is not currently in use in that county. Viewers will also hear from a local oil producer who says that increasing oil production in California could decrease the state's reliance on imported oil and create jobs and economic growth.
