Federal immigration officials detain about 400,000 people a year. Most detainees get deported within months -- but thousands nationwide stay locked up for a year or more as they fight deportation. That raises a question about whether it's constitutional to hold them without a chance for release. It's a question the U.S. Supreme Court is taking up today, as they look at a case from California.
