Retired SFPD Sergeant Kills Wife, Also Former SFPD Officer, and Daughter — Then Himself

The San Francisco Police Department is mourning the loss of two veteran officers and their child after a suspected murder-suicide on Sunday evening in unincorporated Marin County.
Just after 5 p.m., authorities were called to a home on Strawberry Circle, east of Mill Valley, responding to a report of shots fired inside a home.
The Marin County Sheriff’s Office said police arrived to find that former SFPD Sgt. Kevin Mannix, 68, shot and killed his estranged wife, Ann Mannix, 65 — who was also a retired deputy chief in the department.
They said that Kevin Mannix also shot and killed their daughter, 24-year-old Katherine Mannix.
The person who called 911, identifying herself as the shooter’s daughter, said she locked herself in her bedroom. She was able to escape through a window when sheriff’s deputies arrived, according to police dispatch logs.
It’s unclear how many people lived in the home.
The woman reported hearing six to nine gunshots, and police found a man dead inside the residence with a handgun near him.
San Francisco Police Officers Association President Louis Wong said in a statement that the suspected murder-suicide “has left our entire SFPD family reeling.
“There are no words that can fully capture the depth of this tragedy, nor are there simple answers to the painful questions we are all asking,” Wong said.
Wong described Ann Mannix as “a trailblazer” in the department. She was the first woman to not only join the SWAT team, but also lead it, as well as both the Field Operations and Special Operations Bureaus.
Kevin Mannix was with SFPD for 27 years, at Taraval Station and beyond.
“To see their lives, and the life of their 24-year-old daughter Katie, end in such a horrific and senseless manner is a burden that weighs heavily on every officer, active and retired,” Wong said.
Wong urged fellow officers and union members to join together in mourning the tragedy.
“Look out for your watch partners, check in on your retired colleagues, and do not hesitate to reach out if you see someone who is struggling,” Wong said. “Let us keep the extended Mannix family and all those affected by this profound tragedy in our thoughts and prayers.”
The sheriff’s office said autopsies are scheduled for Tuesday.
This is a developing story and will be updated.
