A photo shows Max Bersamin, the late father of former Watsonville mayor Manuel Bersamin. Manuel says he told his sisters to take their grandkids to see the 'Sowing Seeds' exhibit 'so they can actually start to teach their own children, and my father's great-grandchildren, about what my father went through when he came to this country.' (Courtesy Janelle Salanga)

Music In the Key of Fatherhood

Pendarvis Harshaw hosts KQED’s Arts & Culture podcast “Rightnowish.” He says he inherited his passion for music from his mother – her love of funk, R&B, new jack swing and hip-hop laid his musical foundation. In this audio essay, Pendarvis explores how now as a father, he’s passing all of that musical knowledge down to his daughter, song by song.

Fathers at the Heart of Santa Cruz Exhibit Celebrating Early Filipino Farmworkers

Fathers are at the heart of a new exhibit at the Santa Cruz Museum of Art and History. “Sowing Seeds: Filipino Americans from the Pajaro Valley” highlights an archive of oral histories, photos, and stories from the first generation of Filipino men (or “manongs”) who came to California. KAZU’s Janelle Salanga visited with some of the families who contributed their dads’ stories to the archive.

What Sounds Remind You of Your Father?

We explore their messages and listen to some of those sounds: foghorns, Giants baseball on TV, an impact wrench, and even Kai Ryssdal’s voice. These touching memories are certain to get you thinking about the sounds that remind you of your father.
